  • Military Wives: Ambiguity in a Traditional Role

    Open Access•Diane E Levy, Gary L Faulkner et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

The traditional pattern of the two-person career in the military has undergone a transition so that the contemporary role of the military wife has become similar to the civilian one. Data from 111 women married to servicemen stationed overseas at 13 bases in 4 countries suggest that, although the traditional dependent pattern is no longer universal, much role ambiguity and conflict remain as families adapt to the changing military environment

Renee Hoffman Steffensmeier•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1982•Cited by: 5

A factor analysis of a large pool of items dealing with the transition to parenthood yielded a 25-item measure consisting of three distinct, internally consistent, and reliable dimensions which were labeled as Parental Responsibilities and Restrictions (PRR), Parental Gratifications (PG), and Marital Intimacy and Stability (MIS). A causal model offive antecedents of the degree ofdifficulty of the transition to parenthood was developed and tested …

  • Trends in Female Violence, 1960–1977

    Darrell Steffensmeier, Darrell J Steffensmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1979•Cited by: 7•References: 5

This paper examines the issue of whether levels of female violent crime are rising. Two differing viewpoints, both using the Uniform Crime Reports as their principal data source, are compared. Both viewpoints suffer because of a failure to specify the major questions on female violent crime and because of inappropriate usage of UCR arrest statistics. The central questions about female violent crime are clarified, and arrest rates are computed to …

  • Attitudes and Behavior toward Hippies: A Field Experiment Accompanied by Home Interviews

    Open Access•Renee Hoffman Steffensmeier, Darrell Steffensmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1975•Cited by: 2•References: 17

It was hypothesized that subjects who exhibit high social distance toward a hippie-target will be more likely to report a hippie shoplifter than subjects low on social distance. This hypothesis is derived from the theoretical literature in deviant behavior and social psychology and examines two issues: (1) the relationship between social distance and the severity of reaction to deviance, and (2) the extent of congruence between verbal scale score…

  • Sex differences in reactions to homosexuals: Research continuities and further developments∗

Darrell Steffensmeier, Renee Hoffman Steffensmeier et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1974•Cited by: 13•References: 7

This study examines several factors affecting reactions to persons identified as homosexual. Reactions are operationalized in terms of expressed rejection of the homosexual as indicated by responses to a social distance scale. The major variables examined are sex of homosexual, sex of reactor, and acceptance of two commonly held stereotypes. These stereotypes—perceived danger and psychological disturbance—both suggest that a sense of threat is as…
