Contingent Infrastructures Between Italy and the Philippines: Intermediating Labour Mobility at the Fringes of Formal Recruitment Systems
The article examines the mobility of Filipinos to Italy through the lens of contingent infrastructures: loosely coordinated and improvised assemblages of actors and practices that enable migration in the absence of effective institutionalised transnational recruitment systems. Drawing on policy content analysis and 28 semi‐structured interviews conducted between 2023 and 2025, the paper analyses how these infrastructures operate within the opport…
Contract farming and the broken promises of rural development: Inequality, resistance, and disruption in Tanzania’s export horticulture
Export-oriented contract farming has been promoted in Africa as a pathway to rural development by linking smallholders to global markets. Based on field research in northern Tanzania, this paper shows that participation was concentrated among relatively better-off farmers, deepening social differentiation. While a minority secured substantial gains, most participants faced unequal contracts that shifted production and market risks onto them, ofte…
Migration Intermediation and Ethical Boundary Work: The Case of Italy’s Legal-Administrative Field
This article examines the role of intermediaries in Italy’s legal-administrative migration field, focusing on how they navigate ethical dilemmas within a complex and bureaucratic migration regime. Drawing on 27 qualitative interviews with intermediaries handling visa and residence permit procedures, the study highlights the diverse landscape of actors—including profit-driven, solidarity-based, and rights-oriented intermediaries—who operate at the…
Migrants’ Participation and Migration Governance Amidst Hostility in Small Localities: An Italian Case Study
In this article we examine how small and medium‐sized towns address migrants’ participation amidst hostility. To do so, we focus on a small town in central Italy. We scrutinise two dimensions of participation— visibility and agency in policy‐making—and connect them to specific forms of hostility towards migrants that can arise in small communities. We also consider how changes in the social fabric and political discourse can overcome and subvert …
Pretending to be Domestic Workers to be 'Legal'. Uneven Performances of Deservingness Within Italy's Labour Migration Regime
The regularisation industry: A qualitative analysis of the legal-administrative intermediation field
The bureaucratic management of the legal and administrative statuses of mi-grants is a pervasive yet scarcely researched aspect of the migratory experi-ence. This article describes the field of intermediation services for migrants, with a particular focus on legal and bureaucratic support. Using the 2020 regu-larization of irregular migrant workers in Italy as a case study, it shows that actors related to this emerging segment of the ‘migration i…
Externalising migration control in Niger: The humanitarian-security nexus and the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
The article investigates the role of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the global migration regime against the backdrop of the European Union (EU) border externalisation process in Niger. Over the last few years, UN agencies have been considered an essential component of the EU strategy to prevent irregular migrants from reaching Europe. Drawing on qualitative research and ethnographic fieldwork, combining empirical observatio…
Filiere socialmente sostenibili.
