The Origins of Charisma as Process: A Case Study of Hildegard of Bingen
A case study of the twelfth-century visionary Hildegard of Bingen is presented to examine the process through which a charismatic relationship is constructed in interaction between an individual and significant others and more distant followers. Hildegard's identity as a charismatic prophet developed over a number of years through a process of interaction with various ecclesiastical authorities; alterations occurred in both the prophet's self-ide…
Masculinity Scores as an Artifact of Feminist Attitude: Evidence from a Study of Lesbians and College Women
Data from a sample of lesbian women (n = 58) and college women (n = 129) are analyzed to examine the relationship between feminism (AWS), sexual orientation, and a PAQ-defined masculinity score. While lesbians have higher M scores, they also have very high AWS scores. When AWS is controlled in a multiple regression analysis, the difference on M scores between the two sexual orientation groups disappears. The results support the hypothesis that hi…
Lester Frank Ward as a Sociologist of Gender: A New Look at His Sociological Work
This article analyzes the writings of Lester Frank Ward on relevant topics in the sociology of gender. Although Ward's work on the subjection of women has been largely ignored, a new look at these writings reveals much of interest. His theory of early female superiority in human societies, his association of the rise of male dominance with the discovery of paternity and the development of property, his recognition of the role of conflict and forc…
Gender Differences in Reasoning About Military Intervention
The question of gender associations with moral reasoning and values has received a great deal of attention since Gilligan first published In a Different Voice in 1982. Various authors have argued that women are less hierarchical, more relational, more caring, more empathetic, and more concerned about not harming others than men. Yet, these claims have been questioned by other scholars. Data from a small survey of college students are used to addr…
Future Ministers and Legal Abortion: Gender Comparisons Among Protestant Seminary Students
Although there are a few studies of pastors' attitudes toward abortion, they have not included women pastors, nor have there been many studies of gender issues in the seminary student population. In this study, data from a sample of 110 Master of Divinity students at a Presbyterian seminary are used to compare the attitudes toward abortion of men and women. It is found that the men are more conservative on this issue than the general public, whil…

The Relation of Gender and Sexual Orientation to Measures of Masculinity, Femininity, and Androgyny: A Further Analysis
Data from a survey of 58 gay men and 58 lesbians are compared to college men and women on Spence and Helmreich's (1978) Personality Attributes Questionnaire measures of masculinity, femininity, and androgyny. The Distribution of Household Labor among Women in Dual-Earner Families
This paper reports an empirical investigation of the hypothesis that women in dual-earner families maintain full responsibility for domestic tasks involving care of the home and children. Three specific questions are addressed: (a) Is there variability in the extent of home responsibilities among women in dual-earner families? (b) Has there been significant change in these responsibilities in recent years? (c) What are the correlates of the obser…

Birth Order, Sex, and Honors Students' Status in a State University
This study compares data on birth-order characteristics of an honors-student group and a nonhonors group at the University of Florida, by sex. The honors students were mostly freshmen whose SAT scores were within the top three percent of university applicants' scores and who had applied for the special honors program. A few were sophomores who had entered the program later on the basis of demonstrated achievement. The nonhonors group was a sample…
Sex Differences in Correlates of Abortion Attitudes among College Students
Data from a sample of students at a large southern university are analyzed for differences between males and females in correlates of abortion attitudes. It is found that males' abortion attitudes are simpler in structure than those of females. Males' abortion attitudes are related primarily to their degree of conventionality in sexual and nonsexual matters. Females' abortion attitudes are related to a broader set of attitudinal variables, includ…
