  • Does Tax-Benefit Linkage Matter for the Incidence of Payroll Taxes

Open Access•Antoine Bozio, Thomas Breda et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economic Studies•2025

We analyse earnings responses to six large payroll tax and income tax reforms in France. Our findings indicate full pass-through to workers when there is a strong and transparent link between contributions and expected benefits. In contrast, employer payroll taxes with no tax-benefit linkage exhibit limited pass-through to workers, while income tax nominally borne by employees show nearly full pass-through. Together with a meta-analysis of the li…

  • Predistribution versus Redistribution

Antoine Bozio, Bertrand Garbinti et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal Applied…•2024

We construct series of posttax income for France over the 1900–2018 period and compare them with US series. We quantify the extent of redistribution—the reduction from pretax to posttax inequality—and estimate the contribution of redistribution in explaining differences in posttax inequality. We find that differences in pretax inequality drive most of the differences in posttax inequality between France and the United States, and that changes ove…

  • Dividend Taxes and the Allocation of Capital

Laurent Bach, Antoine Bozio et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2023

Boissel and Matray (2022) find that investment increased after 2013 in French firms facing higher dividend taxes. We identify an alteration in the code plotting the event study of the effect of this reform on investment. Using identical data and removing this alteration, we find differential pre-trends between treated and control firms. We also establish that the controls referred to as “size growth,” used in all the difference-in-difference spec…

Over the last fifteen years, France has experienced a reversal of older workers' labor force participation and employment rates.Changes in health, life expectancy or education levels over the period are trend variables and thus cannot explain this "U-shaped" time profile.Pension reforms and associated changes in monetary incentives to retire are a more plausible explanation.Their impact is measured by the implicit tax rate on working longer, whic…

  • Policy discontinuity and duration outcomes

Antoine Bozio, Mónica Costa Dias et al.•REPORT•2018

Causal effects of a policy change on the hazard rates of a duration outcome variable are not identified from a comparison of spells before and after the policy change when there is unobserved heterogeneity in the effects and no model structure is imposed. We develop a discontinuity approach that overcomes this by considering spells that include the moment of the policy change and by exploiting variation in the moment at which different cohorts ar…

  • Savings and wealth of the lifetime rich

Antoine Bozio, Carl Emmerson et al.•REPORT•2017

Whether higher lifetime income households do save a larger share of their income is one of the longstanding empirical questions in economics that has been surprisingly difficult to answer. We use both consumption data and a new dataset containing both individual survey data on wealth holdings and administrative data on earnings histories from the UK to examine this question. We find evidence of a positive relationship between saving rates (and we…

  • Labour supply and taxation with restricted choices

Magali Beffy, Richard Blundell et al.•REPORT•2017

A model of labour supply is developed in which individuals face restrictions on hours choices. Observed hours reflect both the distribution of preferences and the distribution of offers. In this framework the choice set is limited and observed hours may not satisfy the revealed preference conditions for 'rational' choice. We show first that when the offer distribution is known, preferences can be identified. We then show that, where preferences a…

  • Discount rate heterogeneity among older households

Open Access•Antoine Bozio, Guy Laroque et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 6

We put forward a method for estimating discount rates using wealth and income data. We build consumption from these data using the budget constraint. Consumption transitions yield discount rates by household groups. Applying this technique to a sample of older households, we find a similar distribution to those previously estimated using field data, though with a much lower mean than those found using experiments. Surprisingly, among this older p…

Didier Blanchet, Antoine Bozio et al.•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2016•Cited by: 11
