  • Precarious employment and mental health

Open Access•Kvart, Signild Kvart et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

This study investigated the moderating role of household disposable income and family type on the association between precarious employment (PE) and diagnosed mental disorders. This longitudinal study used register data from the Swedish Work, Illness, and Labour-market Participation (SWIP) cohort. The study population included all individuals aged 27–65 who were employed in 2016 (n = 2,509,229). Precarious employment was measured using the Swedis…

  • Failure to compensate or failure to reward? A decomposition of inequality of opportunity

Open Access•Kristof Bosmans, Bart Dormans et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2025•References: 10

We develop new ex ante and ex post liberal measures of inequality of opportunity that decompose into compensation and reward parts. Roughly, the compensation part measures the inequality between individuals with different circumstances (e.g., parental background), whereas the reward part measures the extent to which income differences reflect the market returns to the exercise of individual responsibility (e.g., work effort). As it turns out, the…

  • The Effect of Gender Discrimination on Labor Supply

Nickolas Gagnon, Kristof Bosmans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 6

We conduct experiments on an online platform to investigate the causal effect of gender discrimination on labor supply decisions. Controlling for the piece-rate wage, we find that workers who face explicit negative gender-discriminatory wage inequality supply substantially less labor compared with workers who face gender-neutral wage inequality. We also examine the effect of positive discrimination, differences between men and women, and the impa…

  • Experiences of insecurity among non-standard workers across different welfare states

    Open Access•Kristof Bosmans, Emilia F Vignola et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 29

  • Laissez-faire versus Pareto

    Open Access•Kristof Bosmans, Z Emel Öztürk•ARTICLE•Social Choice and Welfare•2022

Consider two principles for social evaluation. The first, “laissez-faire”, says that mean-preserving redistribution away from laissez-faire incomes should be regarded as a social worsening. This principle captures a key aspect of libertarian political philosophy. The second, weak Pareto, states that an increase in the disposable income of each individual should be regarded as a social improvement. We show that the combination of the two principle…

  • Non-Standard Employment and Unemployment during the Covid-19 Crisis

Open Access•Virginia Gunn, Antonio Vives et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The COVID-19 crisis is a global event that has created and amplified social inequalities, including an already existing and steadily increasing problem of employment and income insecurity and erosion of workplace rights, affecting workers globally. The aim of this exploratory study was to review employment-related determinants of health and health protection during the pandemic, or more specifically, to examine several links between non-standard …

  • Measurement of inequality of opportunity

    Open Access•Kristof Bosmans, Z Emel Öztürk•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 6

We develop a normative approach to the measurement of inequality of opportunity. That is, we measure inequality of opportunity by the welfare gain obtained in moving from the actual income distribution to the optimal income distribution of the total available income. Our study brings together the main approaches in the literature: we axiomatically characterize social welfare functions, we obtain prominent allocation rules as their optima, and we …

  • Precarious Employment and Quality of Employment in Relation to Health and Well-being in Europe

Open Access•María Juliá, Mireia Julià et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Health…•2017

This article presents an overview of the recent work on precarious employment and employment quality in relation to workers’ health and well-being. More specifically, the article mainly reviews the work performed in the E.U. 7th Framework project, SOPHIE. First, we present our overarching conceptual framework. Then, we provide a compiled overview of the evidence on the sociodemographic and European cross-country distribution of employment quality…

  • Empowering Domestic Workers

Open Access•Sarah Mousaid, Kristof Bosmans et al.•ARTICLE•Societies•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Domestic cleaners lack bargaining power, which can prevent them from being in control of their work quality. The ‘service voucher system’ is expected to change the power position of domestics. This is expected because the system is formalized by the Belgian government and organized through a triangular employment relationship between the domestic, the service voucher company (the employer), and the customers. This study draws on 42 interviews wit…

  • How does employment quality relate to health and job satisfaction in Europe? A typological approach

    Open Access•Karen Van Aerden, Vanessa Puig‐Barrachina et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2016•Cited by: 27•References: 9

  • Should Fines Depend on Income? A Questionnaire Study on Values and Institutions

Kristof Bosmans, Lucio Esposito•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2015

How do we make sense of the cross-country heterogeneity in value judgments emerging from international surveys? Our study suggests that the answer needs to go beyond the adaptation of values to existing institutions and should tap into deeper beliefs. In our case, Finnish respondents do support their country's system of income-dependent fines more strongly than respondents in countries using a fixed fine system. However, they also hold different …

  • The Relativity of Decreasing Inequality Between Countries

Open Access•Kristof Bosmans, Koen Decancq et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 42

We study the evolution of population‐weighted between‐country inequality in the period 1980–2009. Whereas previous studies almost exclusively focused on relative inequality measures, we consider relative, absolute and intermediate versions of the Lorenz dominance criterion and of the S‐Gini and generalized entropy classes of inequality measures. The analysis yields robust evidence for increasing absolute inequality. Moreover, this conclusion is p…
