  • An Appraisal of Pharaonic Egyptian Boundary Studies

    Open Access•Oren Siegel•ARTICLE•Études et Travaux•2025

Exogenous and endogenous factors have encouraged increasing research on Pharaonic Egyptian territoriality, as well as the polity’s ideological, social, cultural, economic, and political boundaries. Key themes include studies of Egyptian vocabulary related to boundaries, Pharaonic conceptions of space, frontier fortresses and other material correlates of boundaries, social identity and ethnicity, migration and mobility, cultural, religious, and ec…

  • Combining Geo-Archaeology and Historical Nile Records to Understand Predynastic Settlement Patterns in the Region of the Nile’s First Cataract, Egypt

Open Access•Maria Carmela Gatto, Oren Siegel•ARTICLE•Old World Journal of Ancient…•2024

This paper aims to contribute new data to understanding early Predynastic settlement patterns in Egypt at the beginning of the state formation process in the 4th millennium bce . It focuses on the early settlements of the First Nile Cataract region. We employ three different datasets to address the issue retrieved from a recent archaeological investigation and drill coring and from Nile records available from archaeological and historical sources…

  • Bordering Power

Open Access•Oren Siegel, Brendan Hainline et al.•ARTICLE•Études et Travaux•2024

This paper reconsiders three royal inscriptions of King Merenra (Sixth Dynasty) in the region of the First Nile Cataract. They have long been known to scholars but have not received extensive treatment beyond translations. The inscriptions appear to be among the first explicit royal statements addressing the limits of Egyptian territory and the beginnings of foreign lands. The paper situates the inscriptions within more comprehensive scholarship …

  • The Borderscape Project Webgis

Open Access•Oren Siegel, Julian Bogdani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2024

The BORDERSCAPE Project WebGIS database and web app provide an overview of changes in the settlement pattern of the ancient Egyptian southern border during the long process of state formation and border-making. The dataset is set up in Excel and CSV formats and includes 163 archaeological sites from the First Cataract Region in southern Egypt, dating from c. 3800 to 2300 BCE. Eighty-two sites were discovered by the Aswan-Kom Ombo Archaeological P…

  • Monumental Walls, Sovereign Power and Value(s) in Pharaonic Egypt

    Open Access•Oren Siegel•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2024•References: 26

Large walling projects are among the most visible features in the archaeological record. However, enclosure walls remain relatively under-theorized relative to other monumental buildings. In an attempt to move beyond simple explanations that analyse walls solely as defensive features or symbols, I link monumental walls to notions of sovereign power and action-oriented theories of value(s). Using examples from Pharaonic Egypt, I argue that monumen…

  • Reevaluating the Role of Inter-Polity Boundaries (tꜢšw) in Middle and New Kingdom Egypt

    Oren Siegel•ARTICLE•Journal of Egyptian History•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Chains of frontier fortresses and the presence of boundary stelae have understandably encouraged scholars to emphasize parallels between Pharaonic political boundaries and contemporary political borders. However, ancient Egyptian territoriality and conceptions of political boundaries differed in several key ways. First, Pharaonic boundaries were not defined by their permeability, but rather their capacity to be altered by royal action. Second, sp…

  • The Development and Function of Serpentine/Sinusoidal Walls

Oren Siegel•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Research…•2016

This article discusses the meaning and origins of serpentine walls, also known as sinusoidal walls, an architectural form most commonly attested at Middle Kingdom sites, though examples are known from the New Kingdom as well. Following a review of previous interpretations of serpentine walling and a survey of examples of this architectural feature, this article will demonstrate that such walls did not possess a particular religious or ritual sign…
