  • Timber Reuse in Mediaeval Churches of Finland

Open Access•Franziska Dalheimer, Panu Savolainen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2025

Reusing construction materials is as old as construction itself. The most prevalent historical examples of reuse, especially spolia , consist of buildings made of hard and durable materials, such as stone and bricks. We examined circular wood use, including reuse, remanufacturing and recycling, on large-scale mediaeval construction sites, specifically in Finland’s mediaeval stone churches. In the Nordic countries, especially Denmark and Sweden, t…

  • Stettin Revised

    Open Access•Reima Välimäki•ARTICLE•Church History•2025•References: 6

The article presents a revised dating of a major late medieval inquisition of heresy, challenging the dating of the records established since the 1880s. The inquisitor Petrus Zwicker's proceedings against Brandenburgian and Pomeranian Waldensians in Stettin did not take place between November 1392 and March 1394, with an 11-month pause between March 1393 and February 1394, as has been the scholarly consensus up till now. Instead, the prosecution …

  • The Materiality of Turku Cathedral's Spiritual Treasury

    Open Access•Reima Välimäki, Kirsi Salonen•ARTICLE•Material Religion•2022•References: 6

The article discusses indulgences as an instrument that provided the spiritual treasury of the Church with a material manifestation. We propose that indulgences reflected the Divine within the material world in four different ways: 1) by promoting particular locations as sources of divine grace; 2) by promoting the cult of saints and their relics; 3) by generating donations for the construction and renovation of churches, and 4) by being in thems…

  • Historian poliittisesta käytöstä 2000-luvulla

Open Access•Reima Välimäki, Heta Aali et al.•ARTICLE•Historiallinen Aikakauskirja•2021
