Adolescent Anxiety During the Covid‐19 Pandemic
The international Family Affluence Scale (FAS)
In the absence of suitable indicators of adolescent socioeconomic status, the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) was first developed in Scotland 25 years ago. Since then, it has been adapted for use in the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) Study to research inequalities in adolescent health in Europe and North America. FAS has also been used as an indicator of adolescent socioeconomic status in research studies outside of HBSC, worldwide.…
The Implications of the Covid-19 Pandemic for the Construction of the Family Affluence Scale
The Family Affluence Scale (FAS) is a widely used and validated instrument to measure adolescents’ socioeconomic status (SES). It is plausible that the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting social and economic changes have affected the capacity of the six-item FAS-III to measure adolescent SES, particularly the holiday and computer items. Using data from 247,503 adolescents from 16 European countries participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged…
The great decline in adolescent risk behaviours
In many high-income countries, the proportion of adolescents who smoke, drink, or engage in other risk behaviours has declined markedly over the past 25 years. We illustrate this behavioural shift by collating and presenting previously published data (1990-2019) on smoking, alcohol use, cannabis use, early sexual initiation and juvenile crime in Australia, England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the USA, also providing European averages where …
Mental Health in Adolescents with a Migration Background in 29 European Countries
Do Drinking Motives Mediate the Relationship between Neighborhood Characteristics and Alcohol Use among Adolescents
Adolescents not only vary in their alcohol use behavior but also in their motivations for drinking. Young people living in different neighborhoods may drink for different reasons. The aims of this study were to determine if neighborhood characteristics were associated with adolescent drinking motives, and whether drinking motives mediate the relationship between neighborhood context and regular alcohol use. Data from the Scottish Health Behaviour…
Country‐Level Gender Equality and Adolescents’ Contraceptive Use in Europe, Canada and Israel
More research is needed to identify potential causal pathways and mechanisms through which gender equality and adolescents' contraceptive use may influence one another
The Nature and Psychological Impact of Child/Adolescent Attachment to Dogs Compared with Other Companion Animals
Building on a study examining children’s knowledge and care of companion animals, this paper examines emotional attachment to dogs. It uses a large-scale dataset on children’s health and well-being ( n = 6,700) to explore the connection between attachment to dogs, compared with other companion animals, and a range of well-being indicators. Findings reveal stronger attachments to dogs that are linked with well-being. Some associations are also evi…

The role of community social capital in the relationship between socioeconomic status and adolescent life satisfaction
The present findings suggest that community social capital acts as an unequal health resource for adolescents, but could potentially represent opportunities for public health policy to close the gap in socioeconomic disparities

Sociodemographics of Pet Ownership among Adolescents in Great Britain
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of pet ownership among adolescents in Great Britain and identify any sociodemographic differences between pet owners and non-pet owners. A total of 14,328 11-to 15-year-old adolescents from England, Scotland, and Wales were included in the analysis. Results revealed 15-year-old adolescents were significantly more likely than 11-year-old adolescents to own dogs (OR = 1.146, p < 0.001) but less lik…

Psychometric Validation of the Revised Family Affluence Scale
The aim was to develop and test a brief revised version of the family affluence scale. A total of 7120 students from Denmark, Greenland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Scotland and Slovakia reported on a list of 16 potential indicators of affluence. Responses were subject to item screening and test of dimensionality. Bifactor analysis revealed a strong general factor of affluence in all countries, but with additional specific factors in all coun…
A new version of the HBSC Family Affluence Scale - FAS III
A critical review of the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) concluded that FAS II was no longer discriminatory within very rich or very poor countries, where a very high or a very low proportion of children were categorised as high FAS or low FAS respectively (Currie et al. 2008). The review concluded that a new version of FAS - FAS III - should be developed to take into account current trends in family consumption patterns across the European region, …

Family structure and breakfast consumption of 11-15 year old boys and girls in Scotland, 1994-2010
Family structure inequalities in daily breakfast consumption increased between 1994 and 2010, while breakfast consumption across the population as a whole increased. As the proportion of young people living in an alternative family structure continues to grow it is important to understand why these inequalities have increased and how these may be overcome. Possible reasons for family structure inequalities and their increase in recent years are d…

Self-Esteem and Physical Development in Early Adolescence
Relations between self-esteem, pubertal timing, and body image were investigated with a representative sample of Scottish schoolgirls 11 (n = 1,012, X = 11.53 years, SD = 0.32) and 13 (n = 799, X = 13.53, SD = 0.32) years of age. Data were derived from the Health Behaviour in School Children: WHO Cross-National Survey, specifically the Scottish survey. Among 11-year-olds, early maturation and lower ratings of body image (body size and perceived a…
National Income and Income Inequality, Family Affluence and Life Satisfaction Among 13 year Old Boys and Girls
Adolescence is a critical period where many patterns of health and health behaviour are formed. The objective of this study was to investigate cross-national variation in the relationship between family affluence and adolescent life satisfaction, and the impact of national income and income inequality on this relationship. Data from the 2006 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children: WHO collaborative Study (N = 58,352 across 35 countries) were an…
Socioeconomic Inequality in Exposure to Bullying During Adolescence
Objectives. We examined the socioeconomic distribution of adolescent exposure to bullying internationally and documented the contribution of the macroeconomic environment. Methods. We used an international survey of 162 305 students aged 11, 13, and 15 years from nationally representative samples of 5998 schools in 35 countries in Europe and North America for the 2001–2002 school year. The survey used standardized measures of exposure to bullying…

Children, empowerment and health promotion
We focus on the goal of health promotion to empower persons to alter the conditions that affect their health. The conception of empowerment applied to children implies a fundamental change in the manner in which children are perceived. We propose that it demands a shift from thinking about children as recipients of health promotion efforts on their behalf to children as partners in health promotion whose views and concerns about health are accept…
Indicators of socioeconomic status for adolescents
Many indicators of socioeconomic status used for adults are inappropriate for use in research on adolescents. In a school-based survey of 4079 Scottish schoolchildren using a self-completion questionnaire, over 20% of 11-15 year olds were unable to provide a substantive response on father's occupation. In contrast, indicators derived to construct a family affluence scale, which included car ownership, telephone ownership and the child having thei…

The Family Affluence Scale as a Measure of National Wealth
Becoming a health promoting school
Increasingly, researchers are exploring alternative ways of assessing the impact of 'Health Promoting School' (HPS) initiatives, in recognition of the model's emphasis on achieving change that is both enduring and far-reaching. However, it is still assumed that initiatives will lead to immediate change at the individual level. This paper challenges that view and argues that potential markers of success associated with process need to be identifie…

Inequalities in the health and well-being of 15-year-old boys and girls in Scotland and the mediating effect of the family meal
Previous research has shown the importance of the family in young people’s health. In particular, family structure has been associated with a range of health outcomes with those living in both-parent families generally faring best. The aim of this study is to describe health and health behaviour in different family structures and to assess the mediating role of the family meal on this association. Data from the 2006 Health Behaviour in School-Age…
