Metaphors for Metamorphosis
Spanish mystic Saint Juan (John) of the Cross (1542-1591) began writing poetry while imprisoned by his own monastic order. He developed manuals for contemplation, in part, in the form of commentaries on his principal poems. Their first-person narrators were women who underwent metamorphoses in order to pursue love: one became a dove in her despair; another became flame itself; the last disguised herself as a knight. Juan explained that all three …
Dark of the World, Shine on Us
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film Black Panther portrays the heroes of the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda as godlike. They possess otherworldly sophistication by virtue of their blackness, in contrast to longstanding tendencies in mainstream film toward tokenism, stereotyping, and victimhood in depictions of people of African descent. The superhero the Black Panther, a.k.a. King T'Challa, learns to stand in solidarity with the oppressed, e…
Survivor, Warrior, Mother, Savior
The late Cold War saw the advent of a new paradigm of woman as hero in apocalyptic English-language science fiction film at its intersection with the horror and action sub-genres. In contrast to the helpless, villainous, and overly sexualized female characters before them, the Alien films’ Ellen Ripley and the Terminator franchise’s Sarah Connor represented practical, courageous women who saved humanity through their actions. These ostensibly sec…

Atoning for the Sins of the Fatherland
Germany’s Ecumenical Sisterhood of Mary and its resident theologian, Mother Basilea Schlink, sought to intercede in repentance on behalf of their nation for its sins in the Holocaust. This vision of intercessory repentance had its foundations in both their reading of the Hebrew Bible and in German nationalism. However, whatever resemblance between Schlink’s language and style and that of German nationalism, she utterly inverted its priorities, pl…
A More Brotherly Song, a Less Passionate Passion
When nineteenth-century American Presbyterian pastor James Waddel Alexander wrote the lyrics of the hymn "O Sacred Head Now Wounded," he created what has become the most popular of numerous English translations of seventeenth-century German Lutheran pastor Paul Gerhardt's hymn "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden." That text was, in turn, a translation of part of an anonymous thirteenth-century cycle of passion poems, one dedicated to each of Christ's w…
An Imaginary Israel in Contemporary Germany
Built in Germany in the aftermath of World War II, Kanaan is the retreat center of the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary. They opened their Promised Land to outsiders in order to facilitate their collective witness. For the founders of the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary, Kanaan was a miracle and a refuge. For their spiritual daughters, it served as a reminder of Christ and of heaven. Yet former members of the group have seen the place as a prison, a…
