  • The large flake Acheulean with spheroids from Santa Ana Cave (Cáceres, Spain)

    Open Access•Francisco-Javier García-Vadillo, Antoni Canals-Salomó et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 37

The Acheulean of the Iberian Peninsula is considered a homogeneous technocomplex within the Large Flake Acheulean (LFA) of northern African origin. In this work, we describe the lithic industry of Santa Ana Cave, interpret the territorial functions of the site and search for its technological parallels. Our results place the lithic industry of Santa Ana within the LFA. This assemblage is characterised by: 1) an association of spheroids and large …

  • New methodology to reconstruct in 2‐D the cuspal enamel of modern human lower molars

    Open Access•M Modesto-Mata, Cecilia García-Campos et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 41

OBJECTIVES: In the last years different methodologies have been developed to reconstruct worn teeth. In this article, we propose a new 2-D methodology to reconstruct the worn enamel of lower molars. Our main goals are to reconstruct molars with a high level of accuracy when measuring relevant histological variables and to validate the methodology calculating the errors associated with the measurements. METHODS: This methodology is based on polyno…

The role of small game in Upper Palaeolithic economies has been examined by several authors over the past few decades. Among the small fauna, rabbits seem to have been a widely exploited resource in certain geographic areas, making them one of the main sources for subsistence in hunter-gatherer groups of southwestern Europe. Examining aspects such as anatomic profiles, demographics and taphonomic modifications (including bone breakage) allows us …

  • Cultural Cannibalism as a Paleoeconomic System in the European Lower Pleistocene

    Antoni Canals-Salomó, José Marı́a Bermúdez De Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2010•Cited by: 58•References: 37

Human cannibalism is currently recorded in abundant archaeological assemblages of different chronologies. The TD6 level of Gran Dolina (Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos), at more than 800 ka, is the oldest case known at present. The analysis of cranial and postcranial remains of Homo antecessor has established the presence of various alterations of anthropic origin (cut marks and bone breakage) related with exploitation of carcasses. The human remains…

  • Sleeping Activity Area within the Site Structure of Archaic Human Groups

    Josep Vallverdú, M Vaquero et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2010•Cited by: 77•References: 22

The identification of different prehistoric activity areas and Neanderthal behavior is one of the main research goals at the Abric Romaní site, which is a well-preserved and microstratified Mousterian archaeological site. A conspicuous occupation surface excavated in level N yielded a remarkably preserved set of aligned combustion activity areas in the inner zone of the living surface. This set of combustion activity areas suggests analogy with s…

    Open Access•Antoni Canals-Salomó, Antoni Canals et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2003•Cited by: 33•References: 9

The sediments of the TD6 level of Gran Dolina Cave at Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos, Spain, consist of a series of mud flows with angular clasts. The TD6 deposit has two parts: an upper part, known as the Aurora stratum, which yields Homo antecessor remains, and a lower part with rather homogeneous sediment. The excavation of TD6 level did not reveal a sequence of diachronic occupations. Instead, the contextual and stratigraphic studies permitted u…
