  • Rescuing Gorbachev from the Memory Hole

    Robert D English•ARTICLE•Russian History•2023

The recent death of Mikhail Gorbachev prompted many tributes to the former Soviet leader’s signal achievements in democratizing the USSR , ending the Cold War, and permitting the peaceful collapse of empire. However, a number of prominent pundits have attacked Gorbachev in post mortems that are factually flawed, internally contradictory, and deeply ahistorical. Descriptions of Gorbachev as a “quintessential apparatchik,” a bloody “totalitarian,” …

  • Preliminary steps toward a general theory of internet-based collective-action in digital information commons

Open Access•Charles M Schweik, Robert English et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2013

This paper presents some of the findings from a 5-year empirical study of FOSS (free/libre and open source software) commons, completed in 2011. FOSS projects are Internet-based common property regimes where the project source code is developed over the Internet. The resulting software is generally distributed with a license that provides users with the freedoms to access, use, read, modify and redistribute the software. In this study we used thr…

  • The Sociology of New Thinking

    Robert D English•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 28

This article recounts the origins of Soviet “new thinking” as a case study of how Soviet intellectuals sought to redefine national identity in response to the West. It demonstrates that new thinking was fundamentally normative, not instrumental, insofar as it was developed in a period (1950s–1960s) when “socialism” was thought to be materially outperforming capitalism. It also demonstrates that new thinking decisively affected Soviet policy in th…

    Open Access•Steven L Lamy, Steven Lamy et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2005•References: 7

As we released our call for papers in March 2003 for the next International Studies Association (ISA) conference, the United Nations (UN) had failed to reach a consensus about what to do about Iraq's defiance and their refusal to submit to UN demands for inspections of suspected weapons development facilities. The United States had begun its war with support from the United Kingdom, Australia, and a number of smaller countries. The initial phase …

  • Sources, Methods, and Competing Perspectives on the End of the Cold War

    Robert D English•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•1997

The facts ... are like fish swimming about in a vast and sometimes inaccessible ocean. ... What the historian catches will depend partly on chance, but mainly on what part of the ocean he chooses to fish in and what tackle he chooses to use. It goes without saying that a decade of glasnost has been a boon to scholarship on Soviet politics and history, including diplomatic history. Although archival revelations have not, to date, supported any rad…

What do Soviets think of Americans? What do they learn from books, newspapers, and films about life in America? How do we, as Americans form opinions about life in the U.S.S.R? Through the selective use of both Soviet and American materials, The Other Side explores these and other provocative questions that are central to public understanding of how perceptions affect U.S.-Soviet relations.
