Lithium and the Cinematic Temporalities of Argentina’s Energy Transition
Starting from an analysis of the 2021 Argentine documentary En el nombre del litio (In the Name of Lithium), this article argues that incipient cultural responses to global discourses of energy transition in Argentina foreground a conflict between temporal perceptions of the world. In this case, at stake are the temporalities envisioned by Indigenous communities defending their territories, those of the legal process, and those of globalized corp…
Speculative Ecology
This article traces a neglected form of ecopoetics in Chilean literature, arguing that attention to the speculative ecological visions of poets traditionally associated with the avant-garde, like Vicente Huidobro, Nicanor Parra, and Raúl Zurita, can enrich discussions in the global blue humanities. Unlike the land-based "mestizo ecopoetics" (Casals) identified in the work of Chilean writers such as Gabriela Mistral, in the works of Huidobro, Parr…
Navigating Physical and Digital Environments
This article reflects on developments in research into Latin American video games two decades after the first studies in the field. In particular, it fills a gap in research by reflecting on the pedagogical uses of video games, focusing both on their value in the undergraduate classroom and on the design of educational games for use by school children, asking to what extent games might afford their players impactful embodied experiences and ways …
Collecting What the Sea Gives Back
This article proposes a new mode of understanding the entanglement of ecological and postcolonial questions in contemporary Chilean filmmaking, through the lens of directorial subjectivity. BothTierra sola(Solitary Land, Tiziana Panizza, 2017), andEl botón de nácar(The Pearl Button, Patricio Guzmán, 2015) contest hegemonic structures of belonging by constructing an alternative 'oceanic archive'. Yet where Guzmán's metaphorical meditations on indi…

Nature Trails
This paper examines the introduction of a novel and modern form of natural history education in Britain in the 1960s, the nature trail. The rise in the number of nature reserves owned by county conservation trusts and the Nature Conservancy after the Second World War raised the issue of how they might best be used by members of the public. Reserves were initially seen by many as places from which the public should be excluded. The American concep…
Animal landscapes
The paper considers otter hunting and wildfowling in England between 1945 and 1970, showing how arguments over human conduct in relation to the animal were linked to scientific studies of populations, moral arguments over cruelty and the abilities of field sports to restyle themselves as modern. If wildfowling restyles itself as a new conservationist practice, otter hunting is increasingly regarded as a form of landed barbarism. Detailed studies …
