Constructing the Social System
Japan's Relations with Muslim Asia
Far, yet so Near: Normativity in Japan's Diplomacy with the Central Asian Republics
Japan has been playing a steady and pivotal role in Central Asia since the fall of the Soviet Union, but to presume Tokyo's engagement is predicted on strategic interests that compete with other powers such as Russia and China in the so-called “New Great Game” is naïve to the activities occurring on the ground. Newly independent and largely unaffected by Japanese past aggression, the five Central Asian states present a unique “petri dish” for Jap…
Toward a New View of the Sociology of Knowledge
This chapter addresses five topics: the problem of philosophy; the problem of theory; the problem of the nature of the relationships among culture, social structure, and personality; the problem of the hierarchy of knowledge; and the problem of research methods and data. It presents a broad sketch of how the sociology of knowledge fits into general sociological theory and therefore why it should be integrated into that theory. The chapter describ…
Osteobiography of a high-status burial from the lower Río Verde Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico
This paper presents the osteobiography of an individual from an early complex society who was clearly of "special" social status but was not classified a ruling elite. Our case derives from a unique burial found at the small site of Yugüe, located in the lower Río Verde valley on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Burial 14-Individual 16 (B14-I16) dates to the late Terminal Formative Period (CE 100-250), an era of regional political centralizat…

Constructing the Social System
Barber constructs a provisional, generalized, substantive theory of the social system, which he uses as the starting point and focus of his specialized researches. In this collection of his major writings in social system theory, Barber shows how he has used and developed such a framework over the last fifty years and demonstrates the application of social system theory and its contribution to these areas

Talcott Parsons on the Social System: An Essay in Clarification and Elaboration

Acculturation and Messianic Movements
R OBERT H. LOWIE has recently called our attention again to the problem of messianic movements among the American aborigines.' Among the North American Indians, one of the fundamental myths was the belief that a culture-hero would one day appear and lead them to a terrestrial paradise.2 Under certain conditions, which this paper will describe and analyze, these myths have become the ideological basis for messianic movements. In the messianic move…

International Stratification and Underdeveloped Countries
Sociology, 1941-46
The present position of sociology as a science is best stated in relation to the other social sciences, particularly social anthropology and psychology. That interdisciplinary co-operation in social science research is increasing is shown by recent changes in the organization of university departments and research programs. A synthesis of theoretical equipment is also developing. The war service of sociologists was of a varied nature in governmen…

The Case of the Floppy-Eared Rabbits: An Instance of Serendipity Gained and Serendipity Lost
Two distinguished medical scientists independently observed the same phenomenon in the course of their research: reversible collapse of rabbits' ears after injection of the enzyme papain. One went on to make a discovery based on this serendipitous or chance occurrence; the other did not. Intensive tandem interviews were conducted with each of these scientist in order to discover similarities and differences in their experiences with the floppy-ea…
Control and Responsibility in the Powerful Professions
Everywhere in the United States the professions have reached new heights of social power and prestige. Everywhere, because of the power of their special knowledge, they are of increasing consequence in the lives of individuals and in the affairs of groups, the polity, and the society as a whole. Yet everywhere they are also in trouble, criticized for their selfishness, their public irresponsiblity, their lack of effective self-control, and for th…
