Living at the Edge of the Plain. Adaptability in Late Bronze Age Husbandry at Brinjeva gora (SE Slovenia)
Brinjeva gora above Zreče is a hilltop settlement with remains dating primarily to the Late Bronze Age and the Roman period. This article presents the results of an archaeozoological study of prehistoric animal remains (N = 5500; NISP = 1999), providing detailed insight into contemporary livestock farming practices. The most economically important species were cattle and sheep, with a clear emphasis on the exploitation of secondary products. The …
Macro to Micro Stratigraphic and Artefactual Evidence From an Early Iron Age Smithy at the Pungrt Hillfort (Central Slovenia)
The dataset presented in this paper includes data about macro- and micro-stratigraphy, as well as macro- and micro-artefacts from the Early Iron Age smithy (Building 24, phase IIb2) at the Pungrt Hillfort, Central Slovenia. The data were collected during the archaeological excavation and geoarchaeological sampling at the site, followed by laboratory processing and analysis of the gathered samples. All the data are stored at the Repository of the …
From macro to micro approaches in settlement archaeology
In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary and multiscalar study of an Early Iron Age smithy uncovered at the Pungrt hillfort in Central Slovenia. By examining and comparing the stratigraphic and artefactual evidence preserved at both macro- and micro-scales this study highlights the importance of integrated micromorphological and micro-refuse analyses in settlement contexts. Our integrated approach allowed us to identify the blacksmith’s wor…

The Economic Role of Animals Amid the Chaos of the Crumbling Roman Empire. A Look at the South-eastern Alpine Region in Late Antiquity Based on Archaeozoology and Ancient Literary Sources
In recent decades, several Roman Period sites, from villas to urban centres, have been studied archaeozoologically in present-day Slovenia, providing a solid understanding of the characteristics of animal husbandry in the first three centuries AD. Much less is known about the production, supply, and use of animal resources in Late Antiquity, mainly due to the meagre amount of (published) data. Of late, however, the study of a handful of contexts …
Where are we now? Early Medieval archaeozoology in Slovenia
To …
Cerklje ob Krki
Analize lončenine in radiokarbonskih datacij so nakazale dve fazi poselitve, prvo v 6. st. in v prvi polovici 7., drugo med sredino 10. in sredino 12. st. Tri pridobljene radiokarbonske datacije nakazujejo naselitev Slovanov v dolino krke v času med letoma 585 in 660, verjetno povezano z odselitvijo langobardov v Italijo leta 568 in prihodom Avarov v Pan…
Phylogeny of Late Pleistocene and Holocene Bison species in Europe and North America
Eneolithic pile dwellers captured waterfowl in winter
This study presents the results of an ornitho‐archaeological analysis of avian bones from Stare gmajne and Blatna Brezovica, two Eneolithic pile dwelling sites in the area of Ljubljansko barje, Slovenia. Avian bone remains, together with remnants of huts, tools, mammal bones and bones of other vertebrates, represent the material remnant of a pile dwelling culture from the second half of the fourth millennium BC. A total of 2091 avian bones or fra…

Multi-proxy analysis of waterlogged preserved Late Neolithic canine excrements
Most na Soči
Most na Soči is an archaeological site of key importance in the Posočje region and also one that witnessed most extensive investigations. Remains of its rich distant past have been coming to light over the last century and a half, either as chance finds or through archaeological excavations of the settlement from the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages, as well as the associated cemeteries. This book presents the recent investigations on the left bank of…
