Were Covid-19 lockdowns worth it? A meta-analysis
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented use of mandatory lockdowns—defined as the imposition of at least one compulsory, non-pharmaceutical intervention—took place. We conduct a meta-analysis to determine the effect of these lockdowns on COVID-19 mortality. Our meta-analysis finds that lockdowns in the spring of 2020 had a relatively small effect on COVID-19 mortality and is consistent with the view that voluntary changes i…
Hayek-Myrdal Interactions in the Early 1930s: New Facts Change an Old Story
It is widely believed that Friedrich Hayek's first encounter with Gunnar Myrdal involved the latter's last-minute contribution, as a replacement for Erik Lindahl, to a Sammelband edited by the former in 1933, and that Hayek was lukewarm toward Myrdal and his ideas from the very beginning. Correspondence between the two shows that, in fact, their interaction about this contribution began two years earlier and that their relationship was cooperativ…
Public Support for the Euro: Essays on Labor Productivity, Monetary Economics, and Political Economy, Vol. 2
The euro as a common currency has recently been the subject of harsh criticism by economists from both sides of the Atlantic, including claims that citizens in some Eurozone countries are turning against it. This contribution argues that, in fact, the euro currently enjoys comfortable popular support in each of the 12 original member states of the Eurozone and that potential upcoming referenda in any of these countries do not appear to pose a thr…
Revisiting Public Support for the Euro, 1999–2017: Accounting for the Crisis and the Recovery
This article explores the evolution and determinants of public support for the euro since its creation in 1999 until the end of 2017, thereby covering the pre‐crisis experience of the euro, the crisis years and the recent recovery. Using uniquely large macro and micro databases and applying up‐to‐date econometric techniques, the authors revisit the growing literature on public support for the euro. First, we find that a majority of citizens suppo…
Crisis and Public Support for the Euro, 1990–2014
This article analyses the evolution of public support for the single European currency, the euro, from 1990 to 2014 for a 12‐country sample of the euro area (EA‐12), focusing on the most recent period of the financial and sovereign debt crisis, starting in 2008. We find that citizens' support for the euro on average was marginally reduced during the first six years of the crisis, and that support has remained at high levels. While the pronounced …
Ohlin on the Great Depression: Ten Newspaper Articles 1929–1935
Bertil Ohlin was a most active commentator on current economic events in the interwar period, combining his academic work with a journalistic output of an impressive scale. He published more than a thousand newspaper articles in the 1920s and 1930s, more than any other professor in economics in Sweden. Here we have collected 10 articles by Ohlin, translated from Swedish and originally published in Stockholms-Tidningen, to trace the evolution of hi…
National or International Inflation Targeting? The Wicksellian Dilemma of the Euro-outs
Inflation targeting is the monetary strategy of all EU member states; whether in the euro area, the two euro-outs, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The latter are now faced with two alternatives to achieve price stability: either remain outside the euro area or join it as full-fledged members. This paper examines this policy choice starting from the views of Knut Wicksell, who considered it in his 1920s analysis of an international monetary system …
Inflation and Switches Between Specie and Paper Standards in Sweden 1668 ‐ 1931: A Public Finance Interpretation
A bstract In this study, the recent literature on the integration of fiscal and monetary policy is used to examine the suspensions and resumptions of currency convertibility in Sweden during the period 1668–1931. We demonstrate that urgent demands for financing of war expenditures forced the Swedish Riksbank to abandon convertibility of its notes in all cases of suspensions prior to 1914. We argue that the suspension periods should be regarded as…
The business cycle has not been dampened: A reply
Olle Krantz discusses our article “The Business Cycle Has Not Been Dampened: The Case of Sweden and the United States, 1873-1988” by raising a number of issues concerning the data we use. He suggests that our selection of GDP data (GDP at constant prices taken from Krantz and Nilsson, and linked with recent data compiled by Statistics Sweden) is not appropriate for the type of study that we carry out, i.e., analyses of standard deviations and mea…
The Business cycle has not been dampened: The case of Sweden and the United States 1873 – 1988
The view that post-World War II stabilization policies have reduced economic fluctuations compared to earlier periods is widely held. This is particularly the case in Sweden, long the showcase of an “ambitious” economic policy aimed at stabilizing employment and output, as well as in the United States. In this study, we reexamine the Swedish and the U.S. evidence using a wide set of data. We conclude, contrary to conventional wisdom, that economi…
