African American Literature in Transition, 1980–1990
African American Literature in Transition, 1980–1990 tracks Black expressive culture in the 1980s as novelists, poets, dramatists, filmmakers, and performers grappled with the contradictory legacies of the civil rights era, and the start of culture wars and policy machinations that would come to characterize the 1990s. The volume is necessarily interdisciplinary and critically promiscuous in its methodologies and objects of study as it reconsider…
Leyla McCalla’s Tributes to Langston Hughes
Classically trained Black musician Leyla McCalla’s album Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes (2014) intertwines innovative folk- and blues-inspired settings of Hughes’s blues poetry, interpretations of traditional Haitian folk songs, and original compositions. This article argues that the album constitutes both a vital homage to Hughes’s impact on Black diasporic culture and a feminist boundary-breaking reshaping of the expectations …
Black Celebrity
As I was reading Emily Ruth Rutter’s Black Celebrity: Contemporary Representations of Postbellum Athletes and Artists, an unfolding media story threw into sharp relief the wide applicability and timeliness of this work. In March 2022, The New York Times erroneously published a photograph of tennis superstar Venus Williams alongside a feature about her sister Serena. Although Rutter analyzes literary representations of celebrities who lived betwee…
Genre Experiments

This article examines Thylias Moss’s genre-troubling Slave Moth: A Narrative in Verse (2004), a neo-slave text that depicts an enslaved woman named Varl treated as an object of psychological experimentation. Varl develops a strong subjectivity …
On Brenda Marie Osbey, “whom [we] have every right to love”
This article reviews the recent edited collection Summoning Our Saints: The Poetry and Prose of Brenda Marie Osbey, edited by John Wharton Lowe (2019), arguing with reference to the indispensable pieces contained in that text that Brenda Marie Osbey's oeuvre and especially her History and Other Poems (2012) merits significantly greater attention than it has thus far received. It proposes reasons for that scholarly neglect, highlighting ways that …
