  • Religion and politics after marriage equality in Australia: Contemporary Challenges in the Politics of Religious Freedom

Kate Gleeson, Elenie Poulos•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 6

The passage of marriage equality via the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017 ushered in a new era for religion and politics in Australia. The polarised public debate that was provoked in the lead-up to the legislation continued and only served to entrench the perceived incompatibility of religious freedom and LGBTIQ+ rights. The articles in this Symposium responding to these developments were first presented as works-i…

  • The shifting Christian right discourse on religious freedom in Australia

    Open Access•Angus Mcleay, Elenie Poulos et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Religion•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 33

Political debates over religious freedom in Australia became prominent in the context of marriage equality, achieved in 2017. The Australian Christian Right (ACR) has driven these debates, but there is little research focusing on its discourse of religious freedom. This article examines a range of texts from ACR actors. Using discourse and theoretical analyses, we identify three key turns in the religious freedom rhetoric of the ACR: “ontological…

  • Three Discourses of Religious Freedom: How and Why Political Talk about Religious Freedom in Australia has Changed

    Open Access•Elenie Poulos•ARTICLE•Religions•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Since 2015, religious freedom has become a heated and divisive political and public policy issue in Australia. While rarely defined or interrogated, 'religious freedom' does not exist as a value-neutral principle with a single meaning. Rather, its discursive constructions are varied and serve to promote certain interests at the expense of others. Offering a new perspective on the politics of religious freedom, this paper draws together four separ…

  • The bell was tolling’: The framing of religious freedom in The Australian editorials 2015-2019

    Elenie Poulos•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Human Rights•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 18

The Australian is one of the country’s most politically influential newspapers. Between 2015 and 2019 it ran a campaign, supported by an unusually large number of editorials, which raised the profile of the issue of religious freedom in public debate. This article uses media framing analysis to examine the 40 editorials that addressed religious freedom published during this period. Religious freedom was framed by The Australian as a right under p…

  • The power of belief: Religious freedom in Australian parliamentary debates on same-sex marriage

    Elenie Poulos•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 34

More than merely a theme of the Australian parliamentary debates on the bill to legalise same-sex marriage, 'religious freedom' appeared in the bill's very title. This paper explores why and how this happened using a corpus-assisted analysis of the 663 parliamentary speeches made during the marriage legislation debates from 2004 to 2017. The analysis demonstrates that by 2017, the idea that marriage equality was a profound threat to religious fre…

  • Constructing the Problem of Religious Freedom: An Analysis of Australian Government Inquiries into Religious Freedom

    Open Access•Elenie Poulos•ARTICLE•Religions•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 21

Australia is the only western democracy without a comprehensive human rights instrument and has only limited protection for religious freedom in its constitution. It was Australia's growing religious diversity-the result of robust political support for multiculturalism and pro-immigration policies in the post-war period-that led to the first public inquiry into religious freedom by an Australian statutory body in 1984. Responding to evidence of d…

  • Protecting freedom/protecting privilege: Church responses to anti-discrimination law reform in Australia

    Elenie Poulos•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Human Rights•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Lacking a national comprehensive human rights charter or bill, Australia's legal balancing act between competing human rights protections is captured in discrete pieces of anti-discrimination law. In 2012, the Australian Government released a draft bill consolidating these laws. Most churches roundly condemned this bill. With very few exceptions, the churches have a strong record of opposing progressive reform of Australia's anti-discrimination p…
