Hannah and Joe
(This is a shortened version of a longer review at Leonardo Reviews: leonardo.info/review/2022/07/hannah-and-joe-interspecies-art-between-bird-and-man)Hannah is an African grey parrot. She is 24 years old and, based on other African greys that have lived in captivity, she could live double that or more. Her feathers are grisaille in tone, with the ones on her belly darker than those on her crown. In all the photos I’ve seen, her face is alert and…

Systems and Automatisms
This paper compares Jack Burnham's “systems esthetics” and Stanley Cavell's “automatisms,” linking them by way of organizational and systems theories of the mid-20th century and the rise of the post-medium condition in art. Although rarely paired, curator and critic Burnham and philosopher Cavell offer similar ontologies of art in the post--World War II period. Their ideas freed artists from old constraints of formalism and medium specificity whi…
Marcel Poëte's Bergsonian Urbanism
Marcel Poëte was a founding figure of French urbanisme, or town planning, both its pedagogy and its codification as a discipline and practice in the early twentieth century. The philosophy of Henri Bergson was central to his writings on the city and teaching at the École des Hautes Études Urbaines. I argue that Poëte's use of Bergson's philosophy, his ideas of the vital impulse and duration, may be understood in two ways. First, Poëte's Bergsonia…
Smell and the City
This essay focuses on the role the sense of smell plays as a moral barometer in the urban imagination. Smell has long been a tool by which to determine proper hygiene in the city, whether locating the potential of physical disease by foul odor or, more metaphorically speaking, cultural pathology in the form of prostitution and poverty. The essay deploys the sense of smell within architectural contexts according to the latter definition, that is, …
