Connecting Communities: Limburg Ceramics as Boundary Objects in the Social Networks of Early European Farmers
There are long-standing debates on the social organisation and interactions of the first farmers of west-central Europe (the Linear Pottery culture/LBK, c. 5500–5000 BCE). Here we focus on a specific type of ceramic ware, Limburg pottery, whose morpho-stylistic features and bone temper stand in stark contrast to typical LBK pottery. Despite this, most Limburg vessels are found in LBK settlements. Researchers have proposed a variety of interpretat…
This article presents a new relative chronology for the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) of the Meuse basin. Divided into six main phases, the sequence is based on analysis of decorated ceramics from sixteen sites in Belgium and two sites in Holland. Eleven of the Belgian sites are located in Hesbaye, the province with the densest LBK settlement. The other five sites form an outlying group in Hainaut, a little over 100 km to the west. The two Dutch sites …
From potters’ hands to settlement dynamics in the Early Neolithic site of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes (Picardy, France)
The paper follows on from a joint research project on the ceramics from the late LBK settlement of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes, Picardy region, north-eastern France. In the course of this project, studies on raw materials, manufacturing sequences and decoration techniques have revealed a wide variety of technical practices throughout the occupation of the site. Most recently, analysis of variations in raw materials and tempers in relation to manufacturi…
This article presents the results of excavation in 2007 and 2009 of an early Neolithic settlement located on the alluvial plain of the river Aisne at Vénizel " Le Creulet" (Picardy, France). The discovery of this site provides additional evidence for a dense pattern of early Neolithic settlement in the part of the Aisne valley between Soissons and Missy-sur-Aisne. A total of nine pits were excavated. Three are lateral pits associated with an inco…
Household integration in Neolithic villages: A new model for the Linear Pottery Culture in west-central Europe
Excavations undertaken since 1991 in advance of gravel extraction at Bucy-le-Long "La Fosse Tounise" (Aisne) have produced substantial traces of two Neolithic settlements, the earliest dating to the Paris Basin Late Bandkeramik and the later to the Villeneuve-Saint-Germain group. Despite the close proximity of lon- ghouses belonging to the two successive occupations, assemblages from pits do not appear mixed. Ceramic and lithic finds, as well as …
