  • Climatic controls on phosphorus concentrations in The Loch, Loch Vale Watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA since the last glacial maximum

    Open Access•Jason R Price, David W Szymanski et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The alpine–subalpine Loch Vale watershed (LVW) of Colorado, USA, has relatively high natural lithogenic P 5+ fluxes to surface waters. For 1992–2018, the largest number of stream samples with P 5+ concentrations ([P 5+ ]) above detection limits occurred in 2008, corresponding with the highest frost-cracking intensity (FCI). Therefore, relatively cold winters and warm summers with a comparatively low mean annual temperature partly influence stream…

  • Examining Subtypes of Emerging Adult Situational Drinking: A Replication and Extension Study

    Haley C R Bernusky, Karli K Rapinda et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

Background: Emerging adulthood is associated with heavy drinking. Despite overall heavy use, studies show considerable heterogeneity in emerging adult drinking habits. Lau-Barraco and colleagues (2016 b) identified three subtypes (high, moderate, low) of emerging adult heavy drinkers based on patterns of use across common drinking situations. Heavy situational drinkers had more alcohol problems, mental health symptoms, and coping/conformity motiv…

  • Shame’s Associations with Depression and Problem Drinking: An Ecological Momentary Study

Elena Bilevicius, Tyler Kempe et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

INTRODUCTION: Depression and problem drinking are comorbid in emerging adulthood, yet the processes that link them are not well understood. Research has argued that shame has a unique influence on the experience of problematic drinking, but this has rarely been assessed at the state level. Using ecological momentary assessments (EMAs), we assessed whether shame, and not guilt, mediated the association between baseline depression and alcohol use a…

  • Evidence of Delayed, Recursive Benefits of Self-Affirmation on Anxiety in Socially Anxious University Students

Karen O'Brien, Karen Angela O'Brien et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Clinical…•2021

Introduction: Persons with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often experience social interactions as threatening and commonly avoid them or perform poorly in them (Asher et al., 2017). Self-affirmation is an intervention shown to help individuals engage effectively in situations they perceive as threatening (Sherman & Hartson, 2011). We hypothesized that self-affirmation would allow socially anxious individuals to participate in more social activitie…

  • Boreal Forest Ecosystems

    Open Access•Edward A Johnson, Y E Martin•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

The boreal forest is circumpolar. It had to reinvade from the south several times during the Pleistocene because of continental glaciation. Even in the Holocene the forest composition changed several times. Therefore the boreal forest we see today is a melange of histories and conditions. Only the southern end of the boreal forest has been significantly impacted by intensive land use. Peatlands are common on both uplands and lowlands due to incom…

  • Burning With Envy? Dispositional and Situational Influences on Envy in Grandiose and Vulnerable Narcissism

Open Access•Darren Neufeld, Darren C Neufeld et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2016

Research on narcissism and envy suggests a variable relationship that may reflect differences between how vulnerable and grandiose narcissism relate to precursors of envy. Accordingly, we proposed a model in which dispositional envy and relative deprivation differentially mediate envy's association with narcissistic vulnerability, grandiosity, and entitlement. To test the model, 330 young adults completed dispositional measures of narcissism, ent…

  • Personality, Adjustment, and Identity Style Influences on Stability in Identity and Self-Concept During the Transition to University

Edward A Johnson, Edward Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2011

Drawing on E. H. Erikson's psychosocial development theory, we hypothesized that stability within the self-concept and identity are similar and are regulated by a common set of influences. The participants in this study were 154 first-year undergraduates aged 20 years or younger. They completed surveys at two points 3 months apart. The findings demonstrated a moderate association between identity commitment and self-concept clarity, the two indic…

  • Predicting climate change effects on wildfires requires linking processes across scales

    Open Access•Marc Macias‐Fauria, Sean T Michaletz et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Accurate process‐based prediction of climate change effects on wildfires requires coupling processes across orders of magnitude of time and space scales, because climate dynamic processes operate at relatively large scales (e.g., hemispherical and centennial), but fire behavior processes operate at relatively small scales (e.g., molecules and microseconds). In this review, we outline some of the current understanding of the processes by which cli…

  • Self‐Deceptive Coping: Adaptive Only in Ambiguous Contexts

    Open Access•Edward A Johnson, Edward Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1995

Two experiments investigated claims for the efficacy of self‐deceptive coping (e.g., Sackeim, 1983, 1988). In Study I the performance of self‐deceivers on solvable anagrams was found to he remarkably poor relative to that of non‐self‐deceivers after both groups were exposed to unsolvable problems. The starkly unambiguous failure experience may have precluded self‐deception. Therefore, in Study 2 participants were exposed to unsolvable problems ei…
