Do Buddhist Concepts Play a Role in Social Networks? Exploring the Formation of Social Networks around renjian fojiao in Contemporary China
The point of departure for this study is not a person, a group of people, or an institution, but a Buddhist concept. We argue that this concept has played an increasingly important role in the development of social networks since the 1980s, both in the wake of the revitalization of Buddhist life in mainland China after the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) and with the flourishing of Buddhism in Taiwan since the late 1980s. Based on the conceptual …
The Invention and Vicissitudes of the “Three Great Marvelous Traditions” (san da youliang chuantong 三大优良传统) in Contemporary Chinese Buddhism
Religious life after the Cultural Revolution was more than just a revival of traditions. Much depended on the theoretical framing provided by Buddhist elites, the most prominent of whom became Zhao Puchu (1907–2000). As president of the Buddhist Association of China, he (re-)introduced the so-called renjian fojiao 人间佛教 (Buddhism for a Human Realm) as “guiding thought” and connected it with the “Three Great Marvelous Traditions,” which he identifi…
A Comparative Perspective of "Engaged Buddhism" and "Renjian Fojiao" ("Humanistic Buddhism") in Chinese Speaking Discourse
The two modern concepts, "Engaged Buddhism" and renjian fojiao 人間佛教, with the variety of its English translations (such as "Humanistic Buddhism"), were developed and discussed with and without reference to each other over several decades. This article raises the question of how "Engaged Buddhism" has been portrayed in the Chinese-speaking world. It therefore reflects on a hybrid conceptual history and distinguishes between "concept-unaffected" an…
Factors underlying male and female use of violent video games
Research has consistently shown that males play violent video games more frequently than females, but factors underlying this gender gap have not been examined to date. This approach examines the assumption that males play violent video games more because they anticipate more enjoyment and less guilt from engaging in virtual violence than females. This may be because males are less empathetic, tend to morally justify physical violence more and ha…
Efficacy of an Intervention to Reduce the Use of Media Violence and Aggression
Presenting Thin Media Models Affects Women'S Choice of Diet or Normal Snacks
Our study explored the influence of thin- versus normal-size media models and of self-reported restrained eating behavior on women's observed snacking behavior. Fifty female undergraduates saw a set of advertisements for beauty products showing either thin or computer-altered normal-size female models, allegedly as part of a study on effective advertising. After rating the advertisements, they were offered a choice of snacks that came either in a…
The Worldview of Hospital Security Staff
Interventions to encourage compliance with smoking control policies often rely on intermediaries for implementation, and the culture of the intermediary group might affect policy implementation. The authors present an ethnography of security staff involved in enforcing restrictive smoking policies in a large hospital in Canada. They find strong norms associated with control, mutuality, and deference to authority. Common sense interpretation rathe…
