Acculturating philosophy to its sounds
Stanley Cavell discerned early on that philosophy and literature as practised by contemporary academics made for a contentious pairing. Writing, as he so often did, across disciplinary gaps and contested isthmuses, Cavell occasionally found himself foreign on his home turf or risking rebuke when visiting other intellectual terrains, texts, and traditions. Travelling between cultures, he took upon himself the art of acculturating one to another; s…

Team sports participation, depression, and suicidal ideation in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning adolescents
Rates of depression and suicide are rising in adolescents, with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth experiencing higher rates. We examined the relationship between team sports participation, depression, and suicidal ideation among a representative sample of adolescents ( n = 46,537) in the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey. Logistic regression models using team sports participation to predict depression and suicidal idea…
A Qualitative Study Identifying a Rural Community’s Barriers and Facilitators to Addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences in Families with Young Children
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events experienced before the age of 18 and include experiences of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. Exposure to ACEs early in life is a risk factor for adverse physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood, which may lead to subsequent child abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. This study examined a rural community’s barriers and facilitators to addressing ACEs in families with…
A Photograph as Evidence of Itself
What habit of perception—of description—gives human viewers of photographs the confidence to regard them as evidence? In this comparative study of work by John Opera (b. 1975) and Jill Freedman (1939–2019), light-based art is subject to an analytic pressure that may undermine epistemic claims about what it is photographs can be said to contain. What constitutes a photograph in nonhuman terms is different from what we say, or want to say, it repre…

Legocentrism
Among discernable trends in contemporary architecture, a salient one continues to be what might be called a “building-block” aesthetic. Despite radical increases in the efficiency of buildings – from the digital modeling that makes new modes of structural engineering possible to the LEED certificates that ratify credentials of environmental soundness – we seem, in the midst of these advances, to be witnessing an almost regressive aesthetic in the…
Translating Carlyle
Given the exemplary studies of Thomas Carlyle's influence on the Boston intelligentsia of the 1830s and 1840s, for instance by Robert D. Richardson and Barbara L. Packer, we may wonder if there are other questions to ask on the subject-and then, not so much as a point of disagreement or divergence, but rather in a spirit of seeking what may come to light given that so many elemental aspects have been so well digested by others. Avoiding a rehears…
