  • Towards a missiology of marriage and sexuality

    Open Access•Robert J Priest•ARTICLE•Missiology An International Review•2023

Missiologists have written little in response to many of our modern world’s newly emergent and influential sexual lifeways, ideologies, surrogacy practices, and family formations. The 2020 book written by missiologist Timothy Tennent For the Body: Recovering a Theology of Gender, Sexuality, and the Human Body represents an exception. Thus, it merits sustained attention from other missiologists wishing to consider such realities. This article revi…

  • Faith Integration as a Defensive Shield, Not a Conquering Sword

    Open Access•Robert J Priest•ARTICLE•OKH Journal Anthropological…•2022

I want to thank Jenell Paris for reading and commenting on my article. Her task was a challenging one-to provide commentary simultaneously on three distinct articles by three separate authors on three related but discrete topics: a.) marriage, b.) biological sex and gender, and c.) same-sex sexuality. All authors (including Paris) are anthropologists, are Christians, and have served as professors for much of our lives in evangelical institutions

  • Faith Integration and the Outrageous Ethic of Sex Only in Male-Female Marriage

    Open Access•Robert J Priest•ARTICLE•OKH Journal Anthropological…•2022

This article identifies two competing paradigms of sexual ethics in the student handbooks and codes of conduct at American residential colleges and universities. Sexual misconduct is either defined exclusively in terms of consent violation or, regardless of consent, as any sex outside of male-female marriage—the latter found solely in faith communities.Based on survey results, this article examines faculty convictions related to the above two par…

    136) also places the accused, and negative outcomes for the accused, at the center of her analysis. She first focuses discussion on the case in our report of the accused child Sylvain Mbaki, and then describes and analyzes another single case of an accused Nigerian child: herself. As a result of childhood sexual abuse and related symptoms of trauma, combined with being born a triplet, as a child Chinyere was labeled Ogbanje, a witch thought to be…

  • Christian Pastors and Alleged Child Witches in Kinshasa, DRC

Open Access•Robert J Priest, Abel Ngolo et al.•ARTICLE•OKH Journal Anthropological…•2020

Against earlier predictions, witch accusations are proliferating and flourishing in many modern, urban, and Christian environments. And they are taking new forms. One dramatic change involves who is accused, with children now often the prime suspects when misfortunes occur. Another dramatic change relates to who is consulted when witch suspicions are present. Rather than non-Christian diviners or traditional healers, many now consult Christian pa…

  • U.S. Megachurches and New Patterns of Global Mission

Open Access•Robert J Priest, Douglas Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•International Bulletin of…•2010

April 2010 R Wuthnow, a leading sociologist of religion, points out that while “the demographic center of Christianity is shifting to the global South, the organizational and material resources of global Christianity remain heavily concentrated” in North America and its churches. He argues that missiologists have not sufficiently appreciated the expanding role of American congregations, and especially of American megachurches, in shaping global C…

  • This side of heaven

    Robert J Priest•BOOK•This side of heaven•2007

Historically white Christian colleges, universities, seminaries and congregations are struggling to transform themselves into communities that are welcoming to minorities. This collection of essays enables those who are engaged in these initiatives to understand the historical linkage of race, ethnicity and Christianity.

  • This Side of Heaven

    Robert J Priest, Alvaro L Nieves•BOOK•This side of heaven•2006

This book contains chapters written by a team of interracial and interethnic scholars representing diverse disciplines on the historical linkage of race, ethnicity, and Christianity. The chapters explore the ways in which constructive change can be achieved. The volume is the product of a long-term study funded by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology. In the course of this study it emerged that many Christian institutions now o…

  • Missionary Positions

    Robert J Priest•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2001•Cited by: 19•References: 63

In the late 1960s and early 1970s "the missionary position" became widespread as a technical expression for face-to-face man-on-top sexual intercourse. It was accompanied by standard (and undocumented) stories as to the origin of the expression, stories featuring missionaries and either Polynesians, Africans, Chinese, Native Americans, or Melanesians. By the late 1980s and 1990s the expression had become a core symbol in modernist and postmoderni…
