Foreign Advantage, Regional Stigma? A Multivariate Analysis of Selected Dutch Regional and Foreign-Accented Speakers in Hiring Evaluations
Although many studies have shown accent bias in hiring contexts, the mechanisms underlying different types of accent bias remain underexplored. This study investigated how accent type (operationalized through selected foreign and regional accents) and accent strength (slight vs. strong) jointly influence social evaluations of speakers. In a verbal guise experiment, Dutch participants ( N = 458) rated job applicants speaking Dutch with slight or s…
Reducing the impact of foreign accentedness in English Medium Instruction
Foreign-accented teachers have been shown to trigger negative evaluations by students. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether this form of accent discrimination can be prevented or reduced by raising listeners’ awareness of the undesirability of accent discrimination. In a 2 × 3 between-subject verbal-guise design, 816 (Dutch, international, L1 English) listeners evaluated lecture fragments recorded by Dutch or German speaker…

Dutch students’ evaluations of EMI and L1MOI lectures
In a within-subjects experiment, 119 Dutch listeners evaluated authentic English and Dutch lecture fragments recorded by the same Dutch lecturer. For each fragment, they answered multiple-choice comprehension questions and rated the lecturer on comprehensibility, attitudinal measures (status, competence, likeability and dynamism), and perceived teaching quality. Findings showed that actual comprehension was not different for the English and the D…
Attitudes to regional and standard accents in commercial and non-commercial contexts
Dutch listeners’ evaluations of degrees of German-accented Dutch
The effect of non-native accented speech on speaker and message evaluations is well-researched for English, but accent-induced effects in languages other than English have been underexplored. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of a weak and strong German accent in Netherlandic Dutch on Dutch listeners’ perceptions of and attitudes towards the speaker and the message (in terms of, for instance, comprehensibility, persua…
Effective communication modes in multilingual encounters
This paper reports on an experimental study investigating alternative communication modes to English as a Lingua Franca. The purpose was to examine the effectiveness of different modes of communication and to gain insight in communication strategies used by interlocutors to solve referential conflicts. Findings show that ELF may not necessarily be the most effective mode of communication for speakers who do not share a native language. In the con…
The effects of degrees of D utch accentedness in ELF and in F rench, G erman and S panish
In a verbal guise experiment, 178 listeners with three nationalities (58 F rench, 59 G erman and 61 S panish) listened to samples recorded by female speakers with three degrees of accentedness (strong/slight accented‐ D utch and native) in E nglish, F rench, G erman and S panish. Findings indicate that a strong accent had a detrimental effect on understanding and attitudinal evaluations, while a slight accent hardly led to negative effects. A spe…
Does a Foreign Accent Sell? The Effect of Foreign Accents in Radio Commercials for Congruent and Non-Congruent Products
Commercials regularly feature foreign accents. This paper aims to investigate whether the use of foreign accents in radio commercials is more effective for congruent than incongruent products, and whether foreign-accented commercials are evaluated differently than non-accented commercials. In an experiment, a group of 228 Dutch participants rated non-accented and accented commercials for four different products in a between-subject design. The pr…
Your language or mine? or English as a lingua franca? Comparing effectiveness in English as a lingua franca and L1–L2 interactions
For multinational corporations, the need for efficiency and control has motivated the choice for a corporate language. However, increasing internationalisation has forced corporations to rethink their language policies to cater to the changing demands of the multicultural and multilingual workplace. This paper explores two related issues. First, it addresses the influence of mode of communication (English as a Lingua Franca [ELF] vs. L1–L2 intera…
An experimental study of native speaker perceptions of non-native request modification in e-mails in English
An area of intercultural pragmatics (ILP) that has been investigated extensively is the ability of learners to understand and use indirect and polite language in performing speech acts.ILP studies that have investigated learners' ability to modify speech acts have shown that learners tend to use fewer and less varied modifiers than native speakers (Faerch and Kasper 1989;Hendriks 2002).To date, however, few studies have investigated the eect of n…
