Child Guidance in Britain, 1918-1955: The Dangerous Age of Childhood. By John Stewart. * The War Inside: Psychoanalysis, Total War, and the Making of the Democratic Self in Postwar Britain. By Michal …
Children's emotional well-being is currently an issue that is prominent on the public agenda. It has been argued that modern childhood has become increasingly stressful—with family breakdown, the dangers of social media, and the pressures of school testing being blamed for rising rates of mental health problems. In September 2013 the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence reported that 80,000 children in the UK are estimated to suff…

Gender, Subjectivity and Oral History, University of Warwick, 24 November 2011
The question of how subjective identities are composed in the oral-history interview has been the focus of much recent scholarship. This one-day conference of the Warwick Oral History Network, organized by Angela Davis (Department of History, University of Warwick) and Andrea Hajek (Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick), aimed to reflect upon the current status of the field and address the challenges of the future. Themes considered…

The challenges of evaluating environmental interventions to increase population levels of physical activity: The case of the UK National Cycle Network
Microglia, the innate immune cells of the brain, are exquisitely sensitive to dynamic changes in the neural environment. Using single cell RNA sequencing of the postnatal somatosensory cortex during topographic remapping, we identified a type I interferon (IFN-I) responsive microglia population that expanded with this developmental stressor. Using the marker gene IFITM3 we found that IFN-I responsive microglia were engulfing whole neurons. Loss o…

The Metrology of Stone Rows: A Reassessment
A reappraisal is attempted of Alexander Thom's metrological hypotheses concerning the spacings of stones in the prehistoric stone rows in Britain (Thom 1978). After full consideration of the archaeological status of the sites, and the application of improved statistical techniques, aquantum identifiable with the megalithic yard emerges at probability levels very much lower than hitherto suspected. The suggestion by Kendall (1974) and others, that…
Pacing and the megalithic yard
Simple pacing has often been suggested as an explanation of the ‘megalithic yard’. While such a hypothesis has the virtue of simplicity, evidence is presented here showing it to be inconsistent with actual stone circle data. By means of simulations, the pacing hypothesis is tested against the stone circle diameters given by Thom (1967), and may be rejected at a significance level of about 3%. Further simulations suggest that any satisfactory expl…
