  • Ministries That We Want

Open Access•Fernando Meireles, Magna Inácio et al.•ARTICLE•Legislative Studies Quarterly•2026

Measuring the value of cabinet portfolios is a fundamental task in the study of coalition politics. Yet existing measures are often static, have limited coverage, or assume that all parties value portfolios equally. In this paper, we introduce a new approach that overcomes these problems. We argue that parties signal their portfolio preferences through legislative behaviors, such as floor speeches, bill sponsorship, motions, and budgetary earmark…

  • Cabinet Reshuffles in Latin America

    Open Access•Magna Inácio, Mariana Llanos et al.•ARTICLE•Government and Opposition•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 43

In this article we propose an innovative comparative analysis of cabinet reshuffles in Latin American presidential systems, focusing on personal incentives as drivers of ministerial turnover. We analyse when and why risks of reputational damage to a president drive cabinet changes. These risks are contingent and dependent upon the interaction between a president's reputational assets, on the one hand, and the high ‘walk-away value’ of the ministe…

This paper focuses on the evolution of the institutional presidency - meaning the cluster of agencies that directly support the chief of the executive - in Argentina and Brazil since their redemocratization in the 1980s. It investigates what explains the changes that have come about regarding the size of the institutional presidency and the types of agency that form it. Following the specialized literature, we argue that the growth of the institu…

  • Partidos legislativos e governo de coalizão

    Open Access•Magna Inácio, Daniela Rezende•ARTICLE•Opinião Pública•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 10

O referent…

  • Government or Opposition? The Determinants of Legislative Support for Governors in Brazil

    Open Access•Magna Inácio, Ernesto Friedrich De Lima Amaral•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This article analyzes the microfoundations of support for governors in Brazil based on a decision model in which deputies attempt to reduce their electoral risks. This model considers the effects of the individual backgrounds of legislators, party strength, and the dynamics of political competition in states. We used ordinary least square regression models to estimate the chances of a legislator to adopt an oppositional stance. The results confir…
