Motor Ability and Mental Health of Young Children
This study used a longitudinal method to investigate relations between motor abilities and mental health in young children. We analyzed longitudinal data of 38 Japanese children who were 3–6 years old. We administered the Movement Assessment Battery for Children–Second edition (MABC2) and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) at 3–4 years and 5–6 years of age: MABC2 was used to evaluate each child’s motor ability; SDQ was used to assess t…
Motor Skills and Social Impairments in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the Japanese version of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ-J) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) in Japanese children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The participants were 19 children with ASD. The DCDQ-J is a parent questionnaire that can assess the degree of motor skill impairments, and the SRS assesses the severity of social impairments. To …
Effects of emotional response on the S troop‐like task in preschool children and young adults
This study investigated the effects of emotional response on an inhibitory task, the S troop‐like day‐night task, in which participants are presented with two pictures. They are then requested to inhibit naming what the card shown to them represents and instead state what the other card represents. Specifically, 35 4‐ to 6‐year‐old children and 15 young adults were administered the emotion‐related happy‐sad task and the emotion‐unrelated up‐down …
Target-to-Distractor Ratio Effects on Decision Time in the Orderly Array Shape Cancellation Task
The cancellation task is a paper-and-pencil test commonly used to assess attention or planning. This study investigated whether the decision time performance on the task was influenced by the number of targets and distractors. This study reduced the demand of planning and used an index of the decision time, an estimate of the time taken to decide whether to mark a stimulus. Forty healthy adults (M age = 21.3 yr., SD = 1.5) performed five cancella…
Age-Related Trends of Interference Control in School-Age Children and Young Adults in the Stroop Color–Word Test
In this cross-sectional study, differences in interference control, one component of executive function, were investigated among three age groups, 15 early childhood (7- to 8-yr.-olds), 25 middle childhood (9- to 12-yr.-olds), and 20 young adults (21- to 30-yr.-olds). Participants were administered a computer version of the Stroop color-word test with an oral response; correct responses, response time (RT), and the interference ratio were examine…
Developmental Changes of Speed-accuracy Trade-offs in Manual Skills
Motor ability in adults with mental retardation evaluated by 7-item physical performance test
According to the motor ability model (Nagasaki et al., 1995) constructed three factors (hand power, balance, and walking), a 7-item physical performance test (grip strength, tapping, one-leg standing with eyes open and with eyes closed, beam walking, preferred speed walking and maximum speed walking) was administered to 217 adults with mental retardation (age 18-68 years).(1) The relationships between chronological age and all of the physical per…
Sex Differences in Facial Skin Temperature When Exposed to Darkness With and Without Warning
The changes in skin temperature under anxiety were investigated by noninvasive measurements. The nasal skin temperature of 20 subjects was assessed by thermography. The measurement of the skin temperature by thermistor causes stress in subjects. The primary advantages of a thermography over use of a thermistor are noninvasive and accurate. Each subject was made anxious under the 2 conditions of sudden darkness (Sudden darkness condition) or exper…
Computer Use in Schools for the Blind in Japan
In a school for the blind, computer use and feelings toward computers by 34 visually impaired students receiving secondary education and by their 42 teachers were investigated with a questionnaire. Most subjects used computers effectively, but some students who had low vision did not wish to use them to avoid strain on their eyes. The computers allowed use of Kanji (Chinese characters) by the blind students, providing a new tool in their learning…
