A Study of Species and Individual Differentiation of Burnt and Unburnt Bones Using X-Ray Fluorescence
Commingled remains analysis is a fundamental problem in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. In cases of commingling, the bones of all individuals represented must be accurately and reliably differentiated. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) can identify species and individuals when bone fragments are found in archaeological or forensic contexts. The present study aimed to verify whether portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF) can…
Ecological and historical factors behind the spatial structure of the historical field patterns in the Czech Republic
Historical field systems are an essential part of the traditional cultural landscape of societies with primarily agricultural subsistence. They embody many functions and values, as they affect the productional, ecological and hydrological functioning of the landscape, its cultural values, the way people perceive the landscape, and their impact on present-day farming. As an aspect of the historical landscape, field systems are a topic investigated…
The contribution of Posl and PXRF to the discussion on sedimentary and site formation processes in archaeological contexts of the southern Levant and the interpretation of biblical strata at Tel Burna
A story of abandonment: Settlements and landscape in the Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal
The authors present a new, interdisciplinary project focusing on the interaction between people and the landscape within abandoned and populated villages following the founding of Niokola-Koba National Park in south-eastern Senegal. In this article, they assess anthropogenic transformations from geoarchaeological, ethnoarchaeological and ethnobotanical perspectives in order to document and preserve the heritage of both displaced and settled agric…
ArchaeoLife and environment
Human burials can affect soil elemental composition for millennia-analysis of necrosols from the Corded Ware Culture graveyard in the Czech Republic
Multi-element mapping of anthropogenically modified soils and sediments at the Bronze to Iron Ages site of Tel Burna in the southern Levant
Využití kontextuální tafonomie k rekonstrukci způsobu exkarnace sekundárně uložených lidských kostí
Sekundárně uložené lidské kosti v sídlištních jamách starší doby železné jsou častým a dosud nevysvětleným archeologickým nálezem. Cílem studie je pomocí kontextuální tafonomie rekonstruovat původ a způsob exkarnace sekundárně uložených lidských kostí. Rekonstrukci prezentujeme na příkladu tří sídlištních objektů ze dvou lokalit na střední Moravě (Křenovice 2 a Hulín – Pravčice 1), řazených do platěnické kultury z okruhu lužických popelnicových p…
Interpretive and Analytical Approaches to Aerial Survey in Archaeology
This article discusses two contrasting approaches to archaeological survey using aerial reconnaissance. A more traditional strategy is to look for interesting spots in the landscape with a highly concentrated archaeological record. These are usually called "sites". This concept is still used in everyday practice, despite its long-standing problematic character. The opposing approach divides the studied region into analytical units, which are samp…
Pre-Colonial Origins of Urban Spaces in the West African Sahel: Street Networks, Trade, and Spatial Plurality
Present-day West African towns allow us to study how urban space developed in this region. The urban street networks and layout of residential quarters to some extent preserve the possible movement patterns of pre-colonial urbanites. Long-distance trade, in what is ultimately a liminal and transitory locale, linked the urban nodes on the “coast” of the Sahara. This article takes a closer look on the distribution of streets and quarters as a uniqu…
Structural dynamics of spatial complexity at the ‘Palace of Gede’, Kenya
Using a set of structural and network analysis approaches, this paper focuses on the monumental structure known as ‘the Palace’ at the Swahili stone town site of Gede, located near the Kenya coast. Gede is one of many stone towns that flourished on the East African littoral from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries AD. The ‘Palace complex’ is the largest building on site and developed in at least three stages within the last 100–150 years of…
Immunological detection of denatured proteins as a method for rapid identification of food residues on archaeological pottery
Paradigm Found: Archaeological Theory – Present, Past and Future. Essays in Honour of Evžen Neustupný
The Partnership in Research and Presentation of Archaeological Heritage
This contribution presents a successful research and educational project, which was completed in 2014 at the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň in cooperation with 3 partner institutions. The project aimed at finding innovative ways of collaboration amongst university, museum and culture heritage management sectors through sharing research and educational resources. This goal was achieved by joint research activities, mostly realized as field sc…
GIS Visualisations of Mortuary Data from Holešov, Czech Republic
This article presents a case-study demonstrating the potential of GIS visualisations for analyses of mortuary data, recorded half a century ago at the site of Holešov, Kroměříž district, in the Czech Republic. This cemetery consists of 10 Bell Beaker and 420 Early Bronze Age graves, giving the impression of continuous development over a considerable period of time. The temporality of the cemetery is examined in detail, via its chronological devel…
Burials and Graphs: Relational Approach to Mortuary Analysis
This article demonstrates the analytical potential of graph theory for understanding mortuary practices in past societies. We take advantage of social network analysis software PAJEK to model relationships among burials. The case study of the Early Bronze Age cemetery Rebešovice (Czech Republic) is used to explore the potential of the network approach to explain the contrast between the center and the periphery of the cemetery. Two hypotheses are…
