Religion as a Resource? The Impact of Religiosity on the Sense of Purpose in Life of Young Muslim Refugees in Germany
This study examines the relationship between religiosity and purpose in life among young Muslim refugees (n = 222; Mage = 20.18 years) in Germany, a topic little explored to date. Consistent with previous research, respondents felt a moderate but positive sense of purpose in life, which was fostered by religiosity. Regression analysis demonstrated that even after controlling for physical health and social support, religiosity remained a substanti…
Measuring Muslim Lifestyle Using a Halal Scale
The background and motivation of the research presented in this article is the obligation of Public Theology to do justice to young Muslim refugees as a minority group in German society regarding the role of religiosity in the way they are coping with life. In the research process, the authors became increasingly aware that most instruments to measure religiosity have a Western and/or Protestant bias in that they are more interested in religious …
Human Rights Education and Religious Education
This paper explicates the conceptual background, design and first results of the empirical research project “ The Rights of the Child and the School Subject of Religious Education ” that aims to integrate children’s rights into RE as well as into RE teacher education with a design-based research ( DBR ) approach. It starts by claiming a central significance of human rights for humanity and social cohesion in society and the world and therefore al…
Measuring student teachers’ beliefs regarding religion in schools
Previous findings on religious beliefs of teachers suggest a relation between individual religiosity and professional thinking and acting of teachers. Evidence beyond faith schools and teachers with Religious Education (RE) as a subject is scarce, suitable measuring instruments are also lacking. Therefore, this paper reports the development and validation of two scales assessing teachers’ ‘Beliefs regarding the appropriate role of religion in the…
The Contributions of Religions to the Common Good
The philosophical discourse on the question of “how citizens who remain deeply divided on religious, philosophical, and moral doctrines, can still maintain a just and stable democratic society” (John Rawls) corresponds with the discourse in educational science on the question of how a consensus on major objectives of public education in general and the role of religion in this context in particular can be reached. The author’s contention is that …

Public Religious Pedagogy
This paper addresses the relationship of public theology and education, a field of research that has been neglected in theology as well as in educational theory and religious pedagogy. It does so by firstly analyzing the discourse in the public sphere at the intersection of theology and religious education in Germany, and secondly by drawing on the social theories of John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas to provide a framework for relating public theolo…
