Book-Seams in the Hexateuch II
This volume offers the first systematic investigation of the literary transitions between the books of Numbers/Deuteronomy and Deuteronomy/Joshua. Placing a special focus on the material aspects of ancient Jewish scribal practices, it retraces the development of these literary transitions and considers the implications of the latter for the broader compositional history of the biblical books in question.
Book-Seams in the Hexateuch II
Biblical books, which were transmitted on separate scrolls in antiquity, are not necessarily identical with books in the modern sense of a coherent and self-contained compositional unit. Especially the books of the Primary History constitute a larger master narrative. This raises the question of how the distribution of the text over different scrolls relates to its compositional history. Were the respective books conceived as physically separate …
How Pesaḥ and Maṣṣot Became Connected with the Exodus
The connection between the festival of Pesaḥ-Maṣṣot and the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt is a cornerstone of Jewish identity and religious practice which has its roots in the festival calendars of the Pentateuch (Exod. 12–13; Exod. 23; Lev. 23; Deut. 16). However, a closer investigation shows that the texts in question differ considerably both with respect to the characteristics of the festival and its etiological connection with the exodus. The…
Gottes Wort und Schreibers Griffel
The article discusses the chances and limits of the redaction-historical method in the light of current points of criticism and misconceptions. Based on an analysis of Exod 3:13-15, it reflects some consequences of a redaction-historical approach for biblical exegesis and its implications for the use of the Old Testament in Protestant theology.
Book-Seams in the Hexateuch I
The present volume offers the first systematic examination of the transitions between the books of Genesis/Exodus and Joshua/Judges. The development of the book transitions and their implications for the compositional history of their respective books are examined with particular reference to the material aspects of ancient Jewish scribal practice.

The Exodus Narrative Between History and Literary Fiction
Der ferne Gott als Richter? Zur theologischen Deutung weltlicher Ungerechtigkeit im Koheletbuch
For Qoheleth, oppression and perversion of justice are social realities that continue without any hope of justice being restored in this world or the next. The idea of God as a judge is alien to Qoheleth and it is only introduced in the course of an editorial reworking of the book in Qoh 3:17; 11:9b; 12:12-14. In this process, two motifs which are of central importance for Qoheleth's thinking are taken up and brought to a new synthesis: The divin…

No…
Avot de-Rabbi Natan
