I’ve never cried with a stranger before”
While anti-immigrant policy and practices have a long history in the United States, many students are unfamiliar with the historical or current immigration crises. This study explores the challenges of teaching a graduate seminar about immigration and education at a predominantly white university. Five graduate students and their instructor share their reflections from a post-course survey and field notes related to the course’s ‘pedagogy of disc…
"Beyond "Feeling Blessed
As US colleges and universities incorporate an international requirement for undergraduate students, this study assesses the value of an online international documentary course. The effect of documentary viewing was evaluated using students' reflective essays, noting possible shifts in perspectives on international issues after film viewing. People and State in Socialist Cuba
The globalization and corporatization of education
What are some of the ways in which neoliberalism is impacting the practice and experience of education? People worldwide are being forced to negotiate their identities for survival in a globalized world. How are ideologies of national identity and belonging negotiated in educational contexts across the globe? In what ways are teachers and their curricula perpetuating, as well as resisting, the corporatization of education and its resulting inequi…
Cuban Youth and Revolutionary Values
Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Havana's secondary schools, Cuban Youth and Revolutionary Values is a remarkable ethnography, charting the government's attempts to transform a future generation of citizens. While Cuba's high literacy rate is often lauded, the little-known dropout rates among teenagers receive less scrutiny. In vivid, succinct reporting, educational anthropologist Denise Blum now shares her findings regarding this overlooked asp…
Socialist Consciousness Raising and Cuba's School to the Countryside Program
As a participant-observer, the author relates observations, interviews, and surveys from her experience in a Cuban Escuela al Campo ("School to the Countryside," or EAC) camp located on a collective farm outside of the city of Havana. The Pioneers, the youth section of the official Cuban Communist Party, organize the EAC program nationwide. The program's rugged, military lifestyle experience is required for city-based junior high school students …
Expanding the Dialogue
This article is a response to S. Elizabeth Bird and Jonathan P. Godwin's article "Film in the Undergraduate Anthropology Classroom: Applying Audience Response Research in Pedagogical Practice." The intention of my response is to expand the dialogue on film use to promote cultural understanding in university classes and campus‐wide. Through participant‐observation and the use of surveys over a two‐year period, I examine the transformation of parti…

Teaching about Cuba
In this paper the author offers a reflective perspective of her experiences while conducting research in Cuba in 1995 and 1996, and upon her return to the United States, teaching Cuban culture and history in a public school. In particular, she discusses the challenges surrounding her positioning, location, and accountability as author, researcher, teacher, and comparative educator. She explores the interaction of cultural identities faced as a re…
