The Female-Husband culture in Igboland
The institution of the female-husband in Igboland is a complex, indigenous, and non-sexualised customary practice that allows a woman to act as a ‘husband’ to a younger woman, with the primary goal of securing lineage continuity, preserving inheritance rights, and mitigating the social stigma of childlessness or barrenness within a deeply patriarchal society. Using qualitative data from oral interviews with 18 respondents, observation and ethnogr…
Creation, Preservation and Documentation of Oral Tradition in Ancient Yorùbá and Hebraic Cultures
Oral tradition in both ancient Yoruba and Hebraic cultures has remained challenging in contemporary times. This study therefore comparatively examines the creation, preservation, and documentation of oral tradition in ancient Yoruba and Hebraic cultures with the view to evaluating its transition and historical trajectory. Historical narrative and documentary/archival research methods as well as Key Informant Interview (KII) employed in this study…
Material culture in the Old Testament
Cultural materiality as evident in the Old Testament (OT) was borne out of personal and corporate experiences of ancient Israelites with YHWH (Ex 16:32–34; 25–36; Nm 16–17, Jos 3–4). At the dawn of Christian Missions, certain indigenous religious objects became ‘idolatrous’, but across the Atlantic Ocean, they were works of art kept in museums and art galleries. This negatively impacted biblical reception by the locals. This work investigates sel…
Perspective on Agapeic Ethic and Creation Care
Ongoing discussions on creation care and agapeic ethic have paid less attention to the interplay between love, creation, waste management challenges, and mission. This paper, therefore, discusses a missional perspective of agapeic ethic as a ground norm for eco-theology and motivation for eco-care (especially proper waste management). An attempt is made to discuss the concept and dimensions of love and the nexus between love, creation, and missio…
An Afrocentric Ecoreading of 'Coloniality of Power' in Prophet Hosea's Narrative
This work examines the environmental challenges occasioned by Samaria's 'imperial singleness' in prophet Hosea's text from an African perspective. The interaction between the 'seat of power' in Samaria and imperial forces in Hosea's time appears to have negatively influenced Israel's attitude towards land use (Hos 12:1, 2; 1 Ki 21:1-28; 2 Ki 9:26). Such interface becomes evident in a shift, by Samaria's 'seat of power', from Yahweh's prescribed l…
Multinational oil corporations, policy violation and environmental damage in rivers state of Nigeria
Achieving a sustainable environment is not unconnected with a pragmatic adherence to environmental policies in any given society. The continuous and expanding experience of environmental degradation and its attendant consequences on human and other lives in Rivers State of Nigeria still call for urgent attention for enduring solution. Yet, it seems that all efforts made toward resolving the problem have yielded very few positive results because t…
The Bible and Gender Troubles in Africa
Quickly changing concepts on gender roles are a pivotal issue in after-colonial African societies. Many women (and men) are calling for a radical change as they feel traditional gender concepts as being oppressive, inhuman and un-Christian. Gender equality, gender fairness is on their agenda. On the other hand, for many men (and women) these societal changes are painful “gender troubles” and seem to be dangerous for gender-based identity, threate…
