  • Stakeholder perspectives on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in Malawi

Open Access•Gavin George, Adamson S Muula et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2026

Social norms, institutional weaknesses, and gaps between policy commitments and implementation in Malawi continue to pose significant barriers to adolescents' realisation of their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Early marriage, gender-based violence, and limited access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) undermine adolescents' wellbeing and future opportunities. This qualitative study examines how actor …

  • “My father insisted that I have the baby but not in his house”

Open Access•Beryl Nyatuga Machoka, Caroline Kabiru et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

While the drivers of adolescent pregnancy are widely studied, few studies have examined the social exclusions associated with early and unintended pregnancy. Drawing data from a larger mixed methods study on the lived experiences of pregnant and parenting adolescents and guided by Amatya Sen’s social exclusion framework, this qualitative explanatory study examines how poverty and the contestation around girls’ access to comprehensive sexuality ed…

  • Relationship between social capital and post-partum antiretroviral therapy adherence among women living with HIV in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Khadijat Adeleye, Eyitayo Omolara Owolabi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2024

We found evidence in support of the role of social capital in ART adherence. Strengthening social support networks and addressing psychosocial factors could improve adherence to ART. As such, policymakers and programme managers should consider the role of social capital in designing interventions to improve ART adherence. Future research should explore the mechanisms through which social capital impacts ART adherence

  • Covid-19 related knowledge, attitude and practices in a Southeastern city in Nigeria

Open Access•Nchebe-Jah Raymond Iloanusi, Sorochi Iloanusi et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2023

Although guidelines and recommendations for the prevention of COVID-19 are in place, it is vital to assess how well people know and practice them, as well as people's attitude towards these measures to inform robust interventions. This study examined COVID-19 related knowledge, attitude, and preventive practices. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 140 adult residents of Onitsha, Anambra state in March 2020 before the state's index case and …

  • Adolescents’ experience of mistreatment and abuse during childbirth

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Luwam T Gebrekristos et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2023

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls in Africa have poorer maternal health outcomes than older women partly because they are less likely to access antenatal and facility-based delivery care. Mistreatment and abuse of adolescents during facility-based childbirth can further negatively impact their use of maternal healthcare services. Yet studies on this topic are limited. As a result, patterns of mistreatment and abuse, their association with care satisfa…

  • Cocreated regional research agenda for evidence-informed policy and advocacy to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Meggie Mwoka, Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

box The sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region has one of the poorest adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) indicators, and a multiplicity of structural and sociocultural factors contribute to these poor adolescent SRH outcomes.1–3 Prevailing sociocultural and religious beliefs characterise adolescent sexuality as a taboo.4 5 As a result, interventions or policies aiming to improve adolescent SRH outcomes face significant opposition.6

  • Adolescent sexual and reproductive health research in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Emmanuel Otukpa et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: Previous review studies have not systematically mapped the existing body of knowledge on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Our scoping review addresses this gap by examining how the body of research on ASRH in SSA has evolved over the past decade, and its present profile, in terms of trends in volume, geographic and substantive focus, and Africa-led inquiry. METHODS: We used a three-step sea…

Open Access•Linda K Tindimwebwa, Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study reports on the prevalence and demographic correlates of substance use among individuals with mental illness in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Outpatient Clinic of a large hospital in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. A pre-validated tool on alcohol and psychoactive drug use was administered to 390 individuals with mental illness. Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to expl…

  • Trends in emergency contraception awareness among women and girls in 28 sub-Saharan countries

Open Access•Oluwafemi Emmanuel Awopegba, Okechukwu S Chukwudeh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Our analysis shows that the level of EC awareness has increased substantially in most SSA countries. However, EC awareness still differs widely within and between SSA countries. Intervention to improve EC awareness should focus on women aged 15 to 19, those with no formal education, residing in rural areas, and within the lowest quintile, especially, in countries such as Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia where level of EC is low with laggin…

  • Barriers to and facilitators of HIV serostatus disclosure to sexual partners among postpartum women living with HIV in South Africa

Open Access•Oladele Vincent Adeniyi, Charlotte Nwogwugwu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

We found a relatively higher rate of HIV status disclosure in the cohort compared to the rate recorded at childbirth, suggesting an improvement over time. Also, complicated relationship dynamics and fear of social exclusion still constitute barriers to HIV status disclosure to sexual partners despite patients' counselling

  • Subnational Variation in Facility-based Childbirth in Nigeria

Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Anthony Idowu Ajayi•ARTICLE•The Nigerian Journal of Sociology…•2021

Background Previous studies have not examined the state-level variations in health facility delivery in Nigeria. Because of the decentralised system, state governments have a huge role in decision-making and policy direction for each state. As such, it is important to disaggregate the data at state level to understand patterns and best performing states that can be exemplars for others. We address this gap by examining the sub-national variations…

  • Age heaping among adults in Nigeria

Open Access•Oa Fayehun, Olufunke Fayehun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2020

Age, as a variable, represents a critical basis for demographic classification; thus, its misrepresentations or misreporting alter the accuracy of demographic estimates. This paper examines the extent and pattern of age heaping in the age data for adults, collected in the Nigerian Demographic Health Survey (NDHS). The study used the NDHS data for 2003, 2008, and 2013 to compute a Whipple’s and Meyers’ blended index for each survey year, by gender…

  • Low awareness and use of post-exposure prophylaxis among adolescents and young adults in South Africa

Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Mohammed Sanusi Yusuf et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2020

The vulnerability of adolescents and young adults in South Africa to HIV and sexual violence is well documented. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is available for victims of sexual abuse in the country but awareness of this measure is required to maximise its HIV-prevention benefits. This study examined levels of PEP awareness and its correlates and the uptake of PEP among 772 students (16-24 years) in a South African university using stratified r…

  • Maternal health care services utilisation in the context of ‘Abiye’ (safe motherhood) programme in Ondo State, Nigeria

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Anthony Idowu Ajayi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Maternal health services utilisation has improved considerably following the implementation of the "Abiye" initiative. The findings of this study suggest that with community engagement, health system strengthening and user fee removal for the most vulnerable, universal access to and utilisation of maternal health services is possible

  • Association between sexual violence and unintended pregnancy among adolescent girls and young women in South Africa

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Henrietta Chinelo Ezegbe•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Our study found a huge magnitude of unintended pregnancy among AGYW. Sexual violence is an important predictor of unintended pregnancy in this age cohort. Thus, addressing unintended pregnancies among AGYW in South Africa requires interventions that not only increase access to contraceptive information and services but also reduce sexual violence and cater for survivors

  • Ethnicity, sex composition of living children, and unrealized fertility in Nigeria

Oa Fayehun, Olutobi Adekunle Sanuade et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 21

While studies in high-income countries have shown that failure to achieve fertility desires is significantly associated with unfavourable personal circumstances, there is barely any empirical evidence on the factors that influence the pattern of unrealized fertility in sub-Saharan Africa. Using data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, this paper investigates the roles of ethnicity and the sex composition of living children on unr…

  • Concerns about contracting HIV, knowing partners’ HIV sero-status and discussion of HIV/STI with sexual partners as determinants of uptake of HIV testing

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Abdulazeez Olumide Abioye et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

Worldwide, adolescents and young adults (aged 15–25 years) account for the highest proportion of new HIV infections, yet the uptake of HIV testing among this cohort is sub-optimal. Understanding factors that predict the uptake of HIV testing among adolescents and young adults is critical for designing effective and relevant interventions to increase testing. Drawing from the psychosocial constructs of the Health Belief Model, the study examined t…

  • Alcohol use among Nigerian university students

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Eyitayo Omolara Owolabi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

There is a high rate of lifetime and current use of alcohol among university students in the study setting. Alcohol use was significantly associated with living with parents, religion and religiosity. Both high and low socioeconomic status were associated with alcohol use. There is a need to implement measures in controlling alcohol manufacturing and marketing as well as policies regulating alcohol outlets establishment around educational institu…

  • Factors associated with consistent condom use

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Kafayat Olanike Ismail et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The study found a low level of consistent condom use among study participants. Counselling young adults in Nigeria on condom self-efficacy, providing condoms on campuses and encouraging the discussion of sexually transmitted infections with sexual partners are central to improving the level of consistent condom use among Nigerian university students

  • Protective sexual behaviours among young adults in Nigeria

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Anthony Idowu Ajayi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

This study found that a majority of adolescents and young adults in Nigerian Universities engage in protective sexual behaviours. Adequate family support and living with both parents are positively associated with protective sexual behaviours. The study however revealed that about one-fifth of our participants engaged in high-risk sexual behaviour. This suggests a need for behavioural change interventions, provision of sexual health services and …

  • Inequality in uptake of isoniazid prevention therapy and Mantoux test among pregnant women with HIV in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Open Access•Oladele Vincent Adeniyi, Nonkosi Selanto-Chairman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The high uptake rate of isoniazid prevention therapy in pregnant women living with HIV at the study sites is commendable; however, concerted efforts are needed to address the inequality gaps in the roll-out of IPT. Poor performance of Mantoux test is a serious concern and requires the attention of TB programme managers and other relevant authorities

  • Use of traditional and modern contraceptives among childbearing women

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Anthony Idowu Ajayi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Our findings show that the rate of contraceptive use was high in the study setting. However, many women chose less effective traditional contraceptive methods over more effective modern contraceptive methods due to fear of side effects of the latter. Patient education on the various options of modern contraceptives, their side effects and management would be crucial towards expanding the family planning services in the study setting

  • Use of non-emergency contraceptive pills and concoctions as emergency contraception among Nigerian University students

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Anthony Idowu Ajayi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The findings suggested that female university students are misinformed about emergency contraception and their reliance on unproven ECs constitutes a barrier to the use of approved EC methods. These barriers have serious implications for prevention of unplanned pregnancies in the cohort. Behavioural interventions targeting the use of unproven emergency contraceptive methods and misperceptions about ECs would be crucial for this cohort in Nigeria

  • The Gains and Pains of the Amnesty Programme in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria, 2007-2012

Open Access•Adegboyega Isaac Ajayi, Adesola Samson Adesote•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

The amnesty programme initiated by the Yar'Adua/Jonathan administration to placate militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, though reactive - like previous governments' strategies - has ensured relative peace in the region thereby bringing oil production to its maximum level thus far. But painfully this has not translated to a better life for the vast majority of those living in the Niger Delta who are not included in the amnesty programme. …
