Fiche outil
ProZed (Prosody Editor) is a tool designed to allow linguists to manipulate the prosody of an utterance via a symbolic representation in order to evaluate linguistic models (Hirst 2012, 2015). Prosody is manipulated via a Praat TextGrid which allows the user to modify the rhythm and melody. Rhythm is manipulated by factoring segmental duration into three components: (i) intrinsic duration determined by phonemic identity (ii) local modifications e…

The Momel algorithm models a fundamental frequency (f0) curve as the interaction of two components, a smooth and continuous macromelodic component, corresponding to the underlying intonation pattern, and a micromelodic component, corresponding to the deviations from the underlying curve caused by the effect of individual speech sounds, in particular voiced and unvoiced stops and fricatives. The algorithm is often referred to as a technique of sty…

INTSINT, an INternational Transcription System for INTonation, was originally developed as a tool for linguists to provide a surface phonological representation of an intonation pattern. The original version of the system (Hirst, 1987) was based on an inventory of minimal pitch contrasts found in published descriptions of the intonation patterns of numerous languages. The aim was to provide a tool for the systematic description of these intonatio…
Corpus - OMProDat
The open prosody database OMProDat contains recordings of 40 five sentence passages, originally taken from the European SAM project, each read by 5 male and 5 female speakers of each language. The database contains both primary data, the recordings, and secondary data in the form of different annotation files. Currently the database contains recordings and annotations for five languages: Korean, English, French and Chinese plus a smaller subset f…

Origins The SEC (Spoken English Corpus) is a collection of BBC recordings from the 1980s, grouping eleven different radio speech styles ranging from news and interviews to poetry reading. The data represents over five hours of natural-sounding British English from 53 different speakers (17 male and 36 female). The data includes about 55.000 orthographically transcribed words as well as a prosodic annotation (G. Knowles and B. Williams) using a se…
Phil Withington. Society in Early Modern England
Phil Withington could have put quotation marks around much of his short title, for a sophisticated keyword study anchors his argument about values and practices that made a moment in England into a watershed. The “early modern,” as Withington shows in a superb opening chapter, has a long and humane history. First coined in mid-Victorian debates over the legacy of the Middle Ages, the term offered a thematically expansive counter to “the Renaissan…
A tribute to Wiktor Jassem on the occasion of his 90th birthday
Wiktor Jassem's short article on rhythm ('Indication of speech rhythm in the transcription of educated Southern English') was published in 1949 inLe Maître Phonétique, the ancestor of today'sJournal of the International Phonetic Association. The author was a young man aged 27 at the time, who was working on a longer treatment of the intonation of conversational English which was to be published three years later (Jassem 1952), just 60 years ago t…

Remembering a Hero
The dramatic high-point of Lucy Hutchinson’s Memoirs of Col. John Hutchinson is the account of the Colonel’s escape from execution at the Restoration as a regicide. Her story of his unflinching honour and her own loving disobedience – a disobedience that rescued him from an impenitent traitor’s fate – has entranced generations of readers, including Whiggish, republican and feminist scholars. Despite evidential flaws, and despite long-available ev…

Interpreting Intonation
Intonation provides an apparent counter-example to the claim made by proponents of the Extended Standard Theory of generative grammar that there is no direct interaction between phonology and semantics. In the light of recent work on phonological representations, a phonological analysis of intonation is proposed which breaks down an intonation contour into two component parts: the phonological structure and the underlying tone sequence. It is sug…
