  • Peasant Dreams, Peasant Nightmares

    Open Access•Thomas Newlin•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2019

A nobleman who proudly traced his lineage back to Riurik, Leo Tolstoy spent the greater part of his adult life dressing as a peasant. This essay asks why he did this, and explores how he used cross‐dressing in both his daily life and his fiction to destabilize easy categorizations and challenge assumptions about identity. After surveying some of the many reactions, positive and negative, to Tolstoy as a “peasant” from a variety of quarters, the e…

  • The Thermodynamics of Desire in Turgenev's Notes of a Hunter

    Open Access•Thomas Newlin•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2013

Critics have long recognized that Ivan's Turgenev's Notes of a Hunter ( Zapiski okhotnika ) is only nominally a work about hunting, and that it is concerned, at a deeper level, with much more important issues (serfdom, narrative form, and so on). While in practical terms his "bee passion" proved relatively short-lived, it was an exceptionally intense engagement with a miniaturized and uniquely observable biological and social universe. In this article, Thomas Newlin explores how Tolstoi's dual enme…

Using Russia's most prolific writer, Andrei Bolotov, as a focal point, this text offers an analysis of the pastoral impulse in 18th- and early 19th-century Russian culture. The study also focuses on the tensions that undercut and qualified this experiment in idyllicism
