Depressive Symptoms and Disability Risk Among Older White and Latino Adults by Nativity Status
Given that U.S.-born Latinos had similar or poorer depressive symptom-related disability outcomes than Whites, interventions focused on early detection and treatment of depressive symptoms for this group are warranted and may improve disablement outcomes
Does Brain Reserve Protect Older Women from Vascular Depression
Brain reserve, characterized by educational attainment, may counterbalance the effect of high CVB with respect to depressive symptoms, thereby preserving mood in late life. These findings support the application of brain reserve theory to late-life depression
The Relationship Between Body Weight, Frailty, and the Disablement Process
This study's findings suggest that underweight, overweight, and obese status differentially affect the risk for functional limitations and disabilities in IADL and ADL. Among prefrail and frail adults, some excess body weight in later life may be beneficial, reducing the rate of functional limitations and disability
Coronary Heart Disease From a Life-Course Approach
Policies and programs aimed at improving the conditions of poor children and their families may effectively reduce the prevalence of CHD in later life
Childhood Socioeconomic Position and Disability in Later Life
Objectives. We used a life course approach to assess the ways in which childhood socioeconomic position may be associated with disability in later life. Methods. We used longitudinal data from the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study (1998–2006) to examine associations between parental education, paternal occupation, and disabilities relating to activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs)…
The Health of Older Mexican Americans in the Long Run
Objectives. We compared risk for several medical illnesses between immigrant and US-born older Mexican Americans to determine the relationship between functional health and years of US residency among immigrants. Methods. Cross-sectional, multistage probability sample data for 3050 Mexican Americans aged 65 years or older from 5 US southwestern states were analyzed. Self-rated health, medical illnesses, and functional measures were examined in mu…

Rabbits in the fields
Records of dryland homesteaders in three parts of the Great Basin between 1912 and 1920 show that crop failures were common occurrences, and that failure was more often attributed to jackrabbits than to drought. These records demonstrate that most failures caused by rabbits conformed to well-defined temporal and spatial patterns, but they also make it clear that some losses can be explained only by specific actions taken by the farmers, their fam…
Two Russian Molokan Agricultural Villages in the Intermountain West
Agricultural villages established in the second decade of the 20th century by Russian Molokans in Glendale, Arizona, and Park Valley, Utah, bore striking similarities, with long, narrow house lots, dwellings aligned along a single village street, and outlying lands allocated for crop production. With the passage of time, the Glendale village lost much of its Russian flavor as families responded to individual opportunities, personal tragedies, and…
Household Disbandment in Later Life
Disbandment is an acute episode of a more general, lifelong process of possession management. It is an encounter with things that are meaningful to the self, but as it unfolds, it also makes new meaning for things

The Heritage of an Empty Land
Although emigrants, railroaders, cowboys and shepherds passed through northeastern Nevada's Independence Valley in the 19th century, colonization did not begin until the early 1900s when dozens of homesteader families occupied claims. Soon, parts of this drab basin contained houses, barns, fences, occasional irrigation ditches and fields of dry farmed grain and alfalfa. Plans were made to convert a solitary railroad section camp into a market tow…
