  • Informant Accuracy in Social Network Data

    This paper examines problem of informant accuracy in production of social network data, through use of a self-monitoring network. This allows a comparison between cognitive network data and informants' interactive behavior. Against expectations, it turns out that informants are extremely inaccurate. In other words, informants' reports of their behavior bear little resemblance to their behavior. If an informant claimed to have communicated with so…

  • Catij: A New Sociometric and Its Application to a Prison Living Unit

    A new sociometric technique is described which is generally more powerful than prior methods for analyzing the structure of bounded human groups less than about 150 in size. The method is applied to a female cottage of 41 inmates and 11 staff members (counselors and officers). Data from this application are presented and analyzed regarding the dynamics of subgroup formation. Some general findings are considered, including: (1) a numerical definit…

    This paper is about scientists and policy makers and why these two groups seem so frustrated by each other's demands and advice. It will try to show the human problems in communication between academic scientists and policy makers. Eight areas of value conflict between the subcultures of basic science and policy-making are delineated. It is hoped, in this way, that some light will be shed on the relationships between science and policy-making. It…
