  • The Hemispheric Lateralization for Processing Geometric Word/Shape Combinations

Vicki S Gier, David S Kreiner et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2009•References: 1

The authors conducted 4 experiments to test whether hemispheric lateralization occurs for the processing of geometric word-shape combinations. In 3 experiments, participants responded to geometric shapes combined with geometric words (square, circle, triangle). In the 4th experiment, stimuli were combinations of geometric shapes and non-geometric words. The authors predicted that it would take longer to respond in incongruent conditions (e.g., th…

  • Brain Activities in a Skilled versus a Novice Artist

    Robert L Solso•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Functional Magnetic Reso-nance Imaging (fMRI) scans of a skilled portrait artist and of a non-artist were made as each drew a series of faces. There was a dis-cernible increase in blood flow in the right-posterior parietal region of the brain for both the artist and non-artist during the task, a site normally associated with facial per-ception and processing. However, the level of activation appeared lower in the expert than in the nov-ice, sugge…

  • Mind and brain sciences in the 21st century.

    John Deadman, Robert L Solso•EDITOR•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•2000

The approach of the new millennium encourages people to stop and think about where we have been and where we are going. In these essays, all but one written for this book, many of those who have helped to shape the fields of neurocognition, cognitive science, and psychology give their thoughts on the past and future of the science of mind. Ernest R. Hilgard's foreword presents Personal View of 20th Century Psychology: With an Eye to the 21st Cent…

    Robert L Solso•ARTICLE•Soviet Psychology•1985

Professor Boris Lomov acts like a man in charge—and, in fact, he is. Since the deaths of Luria and Leont'ev in the last decade, Lomov has become the most powerful Soviet psychologist. In Western terms, he is "Mr. Psychology"; in the Soviet Union, as one of his Russian colleagues told me, "He is now a figure." Not only is he the chairman of the Soviet Psychological Society but he is also the director of the influential Academy of Sciences Institut…

A series of Identikit faces were composed in which the features of hair, eyes, nose plus chin, and mouth were varied systematically. These faces were shown to subjects who later were asked to evaluate some of the original faces, some new faces, and a prototype face which was a new face embodying the features most frequently contained in the original series. Subjects misidentified the prototype face with high confidence as a formerly seen face. Th…
