Who forms the mass in mass destruction
This essay revisits the question of mass destruction through the perspectives offered by postcolonial thinkers
Tales of Entanglement
Entanglement, and the way people and worlds ‘emerge through and as part of their entangled intra-relating’, becomes nowhere more apparent perhaps than when we tell stories. In telling stories we invoke a reader, a listener, an audience, even if sometimes that audience is within what we call our selves. But stories do more. They draw out the complex and ambiguous mutual constitution of selves with others, of present with past, of person with place…
Economic Growth with Social Justice: Collected Writings of Mahbub Ul Haq
The book traces the evolution of Mahbub ul Haq’s thinking on development, and highlights its impact on global, regional and national policy debates, and relevance to today’s headline events. It situates the origins and significance (both in affecting academic and policy debates) of Haq’s development philosophy focusing on social justice. The introduction to the volume explains Haq’s reasons for moving away from growth-only philosophy to growth wi…
Coloring the Global: Race, Colonialism and Internationalism
Politics in Emotion: The Song of Telangana
The work focuses on a subaltern local sovereignty movement called "Telangana" in India. Over the last ten years, this movement has engaged in a massive political mobilization, including strikes, rallies, work stoppages, occupation of public spaces, electoral contests, 200 and more political suicides and media battles. But, interestingly enough, notwithstanding a political mobilization that has brought day-to-day life to a halt on a number of occa…
Colonial Wars, Postcolonial Specters
This chapter examines the colonial anxieties provoked by the war in Afghanistan. The American military’s inability to force their oriental enemies to admit defeat or submit to superior force conjures up the specter of American defeat in Vietnam, and with it lingering doubts about the possibility of ever convincing the oriental other of his/her inferior condition. These enduring, self-referential frustrations manifest in the interplay between orde…
On The Politics of Exile
The promise of Elizabeth Dauphinee’s The Politics Of Exile lies most prominently in its ability to exile us from an international relations scholarship trapped in an economy of colonial truth. It is this economy of colonial truth, also readable as Europe, that produces an international relations scholarship and pedagogy that not only self-consciously cleanses the academic world of other ways of learning and knowing but also induces an indifferenc…
Politics Of The Global
Power in Global Governance
This edited volume examines power in its different dimensions in global governance. Scholars tend to underestimate the importance of power in international relations because of a failure to see its multiple forms. To expand the conceptual aperture, this book presents and employs a taxonomy that alerts scholars to the different kinds of power that are present in world politics. A team of international scholars demonstrate how these different forms…

A Theory of Global Capitalism: Production, Class, and State in a Transnational World
A Theory of Global Capitalism: Production, Class, and State in a Transnational World. By William I. Robinson. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004. 224p. $46.95 cloth, $18.95 paper. This book intervenes in the contemporary debates on globalization by asking what it means to conceptualize the global economy. Demonstrating the inadequacy of nation-state-based or international-centric responses to this question, it makes a case for concep…
Diasporas Before and After the Nation
This paper examines diasporic flows in two temporally distinct global economies – the post-Fordist global information economy and the premodern Indo-Islamic world. It asks why and how the geographically central Indian region of the Deccan came to play a key role as a globalization ‘borderland’ in the supply, reception and circulation of diasporas. What would we find if we took the long durations of history and the vast stretches of geography more…
