New Trends in Measuring Environmental Attitudes: Measuring Endorsement of the New Ecological Paradigm: A Revised NEP Scale
Dunlap and Van Liere's New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) Scale, published in 1978, has become a widely used measure of proenvironmental orientation. This article develops a revised NEP Scale designed to improve upon the original one in several respects: (1) It taps a wider range of facets of an ecological worldview, (2) It offers a balanced set of pro- and anti-NEP items, and (3) It avoids outmoded terminology. The new scale, termed the New Ecolog…

Cognitive Integration of Social and Environmental Beliefs
This paper examines the extent to which acceptance of dominant social beliefs and conflicting environmental beliefs by individuals helps to explain inconsistencies among environmental attitudes and behaviors. Specifically, it is hypothesized that individuals who demonstrate consistency in their acceptance of key social and environmental beliefs will also demonstrate greater consistency in their environmental attitudes and behaviors. Data from a m…
Ideological Themes in the Antinuclear Movement: Consensus and Diversity
Utilizing survey data for demonstrators at a national antinuclear rally (N=420), as well as a thematic review of the antinuclear literature, this paper examines ideological consensus and diversity evident in the national protest over nuclear power. Our findings reveal a significant amount of overlap between the ideological themes of the movement and the individual beliefs of antinuclear demonstrators. While the demonstrators display a diversity o…
The Social Bases of Environmental Concern: A Review of Hypotheses, Explanations and Empirical Evidence
In our article entitled "The Social Bases of Environmental Concern: A Review of Hypotheses, Explanations and Empirical Evidence" (POQ 44:181–97), two rows of correlations were reversed in Table 1. Under the study by Van Liere and Dunlap, 1978, figures for the environmental funding scale appear where figures for the environmental regulations scale should be, and vice versa. We regret the error and hope it has not caused undue confusion for anyone …
Environmental Concern: Does it Make a Difference How it's Measured?
Past studies of environmental concern have measured the concept in many ways, often assuming that different types of measures are equivalent. In this study the degree to which different types of measures of environmental concern produce consistent results is examined. The measures are differentiated in terms of the substantive issues reflected in their items, and the theoretical conceptualization used in developing the items. A model is developed…

The Social Bases of Environmental Concern: A Review of Hypotheses, Explanations and Empirical Evidence
This paper reports an evaluation of existing knowledge regarding the social bases of public concern with environmental quality. First, five popular hypotheses asserting relationships between environmental concern and eight demographic and social variables are reviewed, with particular attention paid to the theoretical explanations offered in support of each hypothesized relationship. Second, the results of 21 relevant studies are evaluated to det…
Moral Norms and Environmental Behavior: An Application of Schwartz's Norm‐Activation Model to Yard Burning 1
The purpose of this study was to examine some conditions under which moral norms, i.e., respect for the health of others, would be expected to influence environmentally related behavior. In particular, using a model developed by Schwartz, the study was conducted to determine whether variation in awareness of consequences (AC) and ascription of responsibility (AR) were associated with yard‐burning behavior. It was expected that respondents who wer…
