The Colonels’ Coup and the American Embassy: A Diplomat's View of the Breakdown of Democracy in Cold War Greece
Two Puzzles Involving Socrates
Two well-known but puzzling facts from the life of Socrates bring into question either what we know about him or what we know about Athenian democracy—or perhaps both. These facts are (a) his term as member of the Council ( Boule ) in 406/5 and (b) his military service as a hoplite. The first puzzle can be solved only in the context of the extraordinary crisis of manpower in Athens in 406. The second can be solved only if we assume that, despite …

The year 1999 began with continuing turmoil and chaos in public secondary schools, promoted by both the KKE and ND, and provoked by the reforms and tactics of Minister of Education G. Arsenis. Ironically, when this frustrated aspirant to the PASOK leadership had been moved by Simitis, in 1996, from National Defense to Education, he was presumably expected to do less damage in his new post (see Yearbook 1997 , p. 381). Nevertheless, in January Ars…

From Traditional Clientelism to Machine Politics: The Impact of Pasok Populism in Greece
Research on the transformations of party clientelism in Greece since 1974 focused on jobs and careers and included four case studies of particular organizations and two local studies of contrasting areas, in the Peloponnesus and in Macedonia. It shows that PASOK's accession to power in 1981 brought with it a quantum leap in party patronage, and the transformation of traditional clientelism into machine politics. The Greek experience exemplifies a…

Duverger and the Jacobins
Against the heightened awareness brought about by the bicentennial of the French Revolution, it is surprising to (re)discover that Duverger chooses to dismiss the Jacobins as a mere parliamentary group. In fact, they became the first mass party. This is the key to an organizational explanation of the course taken by the Revolution. It raises new and compelling doubts about the identification of mass parties with the working class and about the de…

Downs Revisited: Spatial Models of Party Competition and Left—Right Measurements
Thirty years ago, Anthony Downs spelled out a spatial theory of party competition that was already familiar, especially in continental European politics, dating back to the invention of the concepts "Left" and "Right" during the French Revolution. Despite the availability of the Left/Right scale as an empirical instrument, relevant research has failed to become cumulative, taking three divergent directions: one concentrating on ideology, another …
