Conceptualization for intended action: A dynamic model
Concepts are the building blocks of higher-order cognition and consciousness. Building on Conceptual Spaces Theory (CST) and proceeding from the assumption that concepts are inherently dynamic, this paper provides historical context to and significantly elaborates the previously offered Iterative Subdivision Model (ISDM) with the goal of pushing it toward empirical testability. The paper describes how agents in continuous interaction with their e…
Enactive Systems and Enactive Media: Embodied Human-Machine Coupling beyond Interfaces
This paper proposes the concept of enactive system as an alternative to the standard human-computer system and elaborates the idea of content mediation as enactive media. The authors' system consists of the two elements coupled in a holistic manner by means of bodily and spatial involvement, or enactment. Such a system is recursive by nature, involving the impact of the technology on the human agent as well as the effect of the human experience o…
Representing and remotivating musical processes: Modeling a recurrent musical ecology
This paper considers musical behavior in the context of an ecological dynamics, wherein the holistic experiencer adapts to the musical environment of which she/he is an active participant. As the result of this participation, a neural representation is developed which not only allows for recognition and representing ('making newly present') of previous musical situations, but also initiates remotivation, i.e. active anticipatory influence on musi…
Musical timbre: Similarity ratings correlate with computational feature space distances
Tarahe paper compares mappings of a set of synthetic timbre stimuli on a Kohonen self‐organizing topology and the distance matrix derived from subjects' similarity ratings concerning the same stimuli. Significant correlation is reported between the two domains. This result is interpreted to provide support for a more general hypothesis implicit in many current connectionist studies, namely that to represent is to project complexes of multidimensi…
