Engaging with Oral Community Language Collections in Australia
Snakes, Sharks, and the Great Barrier Reef
Much research into language contact, specifically on anglicisms in German, investigates the appearance and use of English borrowings in the print media published in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. While these publications are intended for a German-speaking audience in majority German-speaking countries, it remains to be explored what happens to English loans when they appear in a German-language publication produced in a majority English-speaki…
‘So, mein Deutsch ist schlecht … ’
Family language policy research often neglects the dynamic nature of FLP over time. Here, we interview second generation members of migrant families for their recollections as heritage language learners and their experiences setting their own FLP towards their children. We use a transdisciplinary oral history/narrative methodology to discern oscillating attitudes concerning language maintenance and acquisition as a function of changing societal a…
The gender of anglicisms in spoken German
Unlike English nouns, German nouns have grammatical gender. One issue arising from this, when the two languages come into contact with each other, is which gender English loanwords take when borrowed into German. Previous studies on anglicisms and their gender have focused on the printed word, highlighting the importance of semantics over morpho-phonological analogy in gender assignment to loanwords. This paper will provide insight into the gende…

Accountability, Fiscal Management, and Student Achievement in East St. Louis, Illinois 1994-2006
This instrumental case study reviews the 1994-2004 period of state financial oversight in East St. Louis, Illinois School District 189, with a secondary review of the initial years of NCLB implementation. Although the oversight panel’s fiscal management did generate financial stability, case findings indicate that its accountability processes did not result in sustained improvements in student achievement indicators despite anticipated links betw…
Morale of Teachers in High Poverty Schools
This study tested how well Fishbein and Ajzen’s Theory of Reasoned Action predicted the attitudes and morale of urban teachers in high poverty schools under the pressures of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). NCLB forced local administrators to target schools that had not made adequately yearly progress (AYP) for two or more consecutive years. Teachers from 4 schools in an urban school district in Southern Illinois were surveyed under the scope…
Talking Cents
Since Jonathan Kozol's 1991 publication of Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools, East St. Louis, Illinois, District 189 has endured unswerving criticism and study. While Kozol's work made publicly known the horrible conditions of schools in the district, it did not bring immediate relief. In 1994, the state appointed a financial oversight panel to review the work of the local school board and to begin work on the district's budgetar…
Overcoming the challenges to consumer involvement in cancer research
Introduction Within the last decade, there have been many government initiatives to promote consumer involvement in research, especially in cancer. At the same time, the number and influence of consumer groups themselves have expanded. However, the organizational infrastructure necessary to facilitate consumer involvement has not been developed. Consequently, consumer involvement has tended to remain essentially localized and project driven, with…
Urwick on the Pioneers of Management

For this he has been recognized internationally, holding most of the major awards for excellence in contributions to management. He is now 87 years old and lives in Australia. In this paper the authors report an edited version of Urwick's verbal responses to questions about Taylor, the Gilbreths, Gant, Fayol, Mayo, M…
