Provenance attribution of lapis lazuli rocks processed at the Bronze age archaeological site of Shahr-i Sokhta (Iran)
Tracing Old Gestures: A Multiscale Analysis of Ground Stone Tools Developed on Sequential Lab-Controlled Replicative Experiments
This article presents an analytical procedure developed to replicate, document, and analyse the formation and evolution of use-wear traces on task-specific ground stone tools. The purpose of this study is to build a reference collection for wear patterns that occurred during the processing of vegetal resources, specifically those compatible with the MIS 3 period. To create the collection, riverine slabs and pebbles were utilised and various aspec…
Petrographic characterization of historic mortar as a tool in archaeologic study: Examples from two medieval castles of Aosta Valley, Northwestern Italy
SEM-EDS characterization of historic mortar as a tool in archaeometric study: An updated analytical protocol tested on the Roman theatre of Aosta (NW Italy)
"Some insight into "bronze quadrigati: A Multi-Analytical Approach
One of the more obscure areas of Roman Republican early coinage are debased quadrigati, which traditionally are deemed to represent the last stage of this coin type. Starting from a pre-screening, based on low specific gravity samples, we first performed neutron diffraction analyses on a larger sample, which allowed us to single out the more debased series. Subsequently, we focused on those series and applied various additional physical investiga…
Geology of the Monte Banchetta – Punta Rognosa area (Troncea valley, Western Alps)
The map ‘Geology of the Monte Banchetta – Punta Rognosa area (Troncea valley, Western Alps)’ details the lithostratigraphy and structural setting of a key sector in the Alpine chain, characterized by close associations of continental and oceanic basements, and meta-sediments. The mapped Monte Banchetta – Punta Rognosa unit (BRU), tectonically juxtaposed to different metaophiolitic units, comprises the Punta Rognosa succession, made of serpentiniz…
Geology of the Susa Shear Zone (Susa Valley, Western Alps)
The 1:10,000 scale geological map of the Susa Shear Zone (SSZ) in the inner sector of the Western Alps, aims to describe the geological setting and tectonic evolution of a first-order Alpine shear zone, which drove exhumation and juxtaposition of different oceanic and continental margin units (i.e. the blueschist-facies External Piedmont Zone in its hanging wall and the eclogite-facies Internal Piedmont Zone and Dora Maira Massif in its footwall)…
Ornamental stones of Piemonte (NW Italy): An updated geo-lithological map
The ‘Ornamental Stones of Piemonte Region’ geo-lithological map at 1:250,000 scale aims at reviewing the ornamental stone heritage of Piemonte at the regional scale. The map derives from a thorough revision of the available literature, integrated with some unpublished original data. The map shows the location of the main quarries of ornamental stones of the region, selected on the basis of their historical, cultural and architectonic relevance. A…
Archaeometric investigation of pottery from funerary gifts in Kal‐e Chendar, Shami (Khuzestan, Iran)
Thirty fragments of red slip, glazed, common and cooking ware from Hellenistic and Parthian tombs at Kal‐e Chendar in Shami (Iran) were investigated. Petrographic assemblage and chemometric evaluation of chemical data collected most samples in a large cluster, suggesting a common provenance, even in a quite wide area which includes Izeh plain and lowland Susiana, and underlining the presence of smaller very distinguished groupings. Surface finish…
New petrographic and geochemical tracers for recognizing the provenance quarry of trachyte of the Euganean Hills, northeastern Italy
Trachyte of the Euganean Hills is a subvolcanic porphyritic rock historically used as carving and building stone in northern and central Italy–primarily from Roman times onward–with the first evidence of its use dating back to prehistory. The numerous quarries and very similar trachyte varieties, as well as the widespread use of this stone, create several problems in defining its provenance for archaeological and historical materials. New petrogr…
The White Marble of the Arch of Augustus (Susa, North-Western Italy): Mineralogical and Petrographic Analysis for the Definition of its Origin
The Arch of Augustus in Susa (north-western Italy) was built in 9–8 bc by King Cottius, to celebrate the treaty between the Romans and the Gauls. It is made of white marble, which was considered for a long time to be locally extracted, but no archaeometric studies have been performed up to now. Therefore, a multi-analytical study based on petrographic (optical and scanning electron microscopy), electron microprobe and stable isotope analyses was …
Protocol for lapis lazuli provenance determination: Evidence for an Afghan origin of the stones used for ancient carved artefacts kept at the Egyptian Museum of Florence (Italy)
New considerations on trace elements for quarry provenance investigation of ancient white marbles
Characterization of Late Prehistoric Plasters and Mortars from Erimi – Laonin tou Porakou (Limassol, Cyprus)
Several plasters and mortars from the Middle Bronze Age site of Erimi – Laonin tou Porakou (Cyprus) were analysed in order to perform a technological characterization. Morphological (SEM), elemental (EDX), mineralogical (XRPD), petrographic (polarized OM, SEM–EDX), thermal (TGA) and spectroscopic (FT–IR) techniques were applied. Plasters and mortars were identified as pyrotechnological lime products, obtained using local raw materials and contain…
Multi-technique characterization of various artefacts and raw materials from Old Nisa (Turkmenistan): A preliminary study
A Petrographic Study of the Anthropomorphic Stelae from the Megalithic Area of Saint‐Martin‐De‐Corléans ( A osta, N orthern I taly)
The Megalithic Area of Saint‐Martin‐de‐Corléans ( A osta, northern I taly) consists of anthropomorphic stelae dated to the Copper Age and the beginning of the Early Bronze Age. They were carved in different lithologies of varying provenance according to two successive artistic styles, ‘ancient’ and ‘evolved’. A minero‐chemical and a petrographic investigation were carried out on 47 stelae and on reference samples collected from eight different ou…
Black and Red Granites in the Egyptian Antiquity Museum of Turin: A Minero‐petrographic and Provenance Study
A recent project to investigate the stone artefacts preserved in the Egyptian Antiquity Museum of Turin has been undertaken, with the aim of supplying their systematic classification and suggesting the provenance site of the original raw materials. This paper focuses on seven sculptures dating back to the New Kingdom (18th–19th Dynasties): the statue of Ramses II, three of the 21 sculptures of the goddess Sekhmet, the statue of the goddess Hathor…
The Piedmont White Marbles Used in Antiquity: An Archaeometric Distinction Inferred by a Minero‐petrographic and C–o Stable Isotope Study
The metamorphic rocks outcropping in the Western Alps are characterized by a great variety of white marbles, which have been poorly studied in the archaeometric field even though they have been used since antiquity. Typical examples are the Arc of August of Roman times in Susa (Piedmont, Italy) and lots of monuments and historical buildings of Turin (Italy). A multi‐analytical approach based on petrographic (optical and scanning electron microsco…
Relationship between body composition and bone mineral content in young and elderly women
In Caucasian women, (1) LTM is a stronger predictor of BMC than FM, but (2) Wt is a better predictor of BMC than body composition for practical purposes, and (3) Wt and body composition are not able to explain more than 46% of BMC variance
