    Open Access•Klaus J Kohler•BOOK•Communicative Functions and…•2017•References: 6

Prosody is generally studied at a separate linguistic level from syntax and semantics. It analyses phonetic properties of utterances such as pitch and prominence, and orders them into phonological categories such as pitch accent, boundary tone, and metrical grid. The goal is to define distinctive formal differentiators of meanings in utterances. But what these meanings are is either excluded or a secondary concern. This book takes the opposite ap…

Since the 14th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences in San Francisco in August 1999, two decisive events have set signals for the future directions of phonetics in general and of the International Phonetic Association in particular. • Articulatory dynamics of vowels and consonants in speech communication

    Open Access•Klaus J Kohler•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2001•Cited by: 3

This paper provides a statistical account of schwa elision and vowel nasalization, and of nasalization and deletion of plosives in a large corpus of German spontaneous dialogues in comparison with an equally large data base of read speech (sentences and texts) from large groups of North German speakers. The phonetic variability of these phrase-level processes is projected onto the articulatory dynamics in global opening and closing gestures, whic…

Within this overall scientific frame, three general perspectives are distinguished - 'speech signal analysis', 'historical linguistics and sound change', 'phonetics of the languages of the world' - under which…
