  • Bordered penality in the Netherlands

    Open Access•J H Brouwer•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 8

In recent years there has been growing attention for so-called crimmigration prisons: all-foreign prisons with immigration staff embedded where not rehabilitation, but deportation is the ultimate aim. Following Norway and the United Kingdom, since 2014 the Netherlands is another country with such a prison. This article analyses penal policies in the Netherlands vis-à-vis foreign national prisoners, including the establishment of the crimmigration…

  • Unravelling the ‘crimmigration knot’

    Open Access•Eleonora Di Molfetta, J H Brouwer•ARTICLE•Criminology & Criminal Justice•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This article explores the challenges that (cr)immigration practices pose to draw the boundaries of punishment by examining foreign national prisoners’ penal subjectivities. More exclusionary and draconian migration policies have blurred the boundaries between border control and crime control, creating hybrid forms of punishment that, even if officially claimed as measures outside the criminal justice realm, inflict pain and communicate censure. D…

Research suggests that social identity plays an important role in citizens’ views of legal authorities. This article draws on fieldwork observations and semi-structured interviews or surveys to examine both officers’ perceptions and the experiences of people that are stopped in the context of border policing in the border areas of the Netherlands. Our results indicate that non-Dutch citizens and Dutch majority group members generally find these s…

  • (Cr)immigrant framing in border areas

    Open Access•J H Brouwer, Maartje Van Der Woude et al.•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 13

When the internal borders of the Schengen area were no longer supposed to be enforced, concerns about an influx of irregular migrants and an increase in cross-border crime in the Netherlands led to the instalment of the Mobile Security Monitor (MSM), a form of migration policing in the border areas with Belgium and Germany. Since its instalment in 1994 this instrument has developed from an instrument aimed at migration control to an instrument th…

  • Helping hands

    J H Brouwer, Jelmer Brouwer et al.•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 35

This article analyses to what extent the Burmese KNU insurgency made use of external support from states, refugees, and diasporas. Based on extensive fieldwork it is concluded that support from neighbouring states and refugees has for years kept the Karen rebellion alive. Western countries perceived forms of resistance to the illegitimate Burmese regime as just and have therefore played a crucial role in the continuation of conflict in Karen Stat…
