Human responses to the Ilopango Tierra Blanca Joven eruption
Human responses to catastrophic natural events form an important research theme in archaeology. Using excavation and radiocarbon data, this article investigates the socio-cultural impact of the mid-first-millennium AD Tierra Blanca Joven eruption at San Andrés, El Salvador. The data, along with an architectural energetic analysis of the Campana structure at San Andrés, indicate that survivors and/or re-settlers made considerable efforts to constr…

Monumental Structures and Volcanic Activities
This article presents stratigraphic data and radiocarbon dates combined with Bayesian modeling from San Andrés in the Zapotitán Valley, El Salvador, focusing on the Campana Structure, the largest and longest-used monumental structure at the site. These data refine the regional chronology of the valley and provide insights into the emergence, development, and abandonment of this pivotal center in southeastern Mesoamerica and its potential links to…
Pottery production in salt workshops
Crystallized salt can be extracted by boiling brine in pottery over fire. This technique was implemented in many ancient civilizations throughout the world and is used even today. We identified the raw materials and technological aspects of potteries used in salt workshops from the Early Classic period (AD 250–550) of Nueva Esperanza (Pacific coast of El Salvador) by subjecting 19 samples to a petrographic analysis and wavelength-dispersive X-ray…
Strengthening social relationships through community archaeology at Nueva Esperanza, El Salvador
Though collaborative community archaeology continues to grow worldwide, it is still an underdeveloped aspect of archaeological research in Central America. In this article, I describe an attempt to conduct community archaeology in the community of Nueva Esperanza, El Salvador. This article outlines how archaeological findings and collaborative archaeological practices impacted the people living at the site and how a community's collaboration impa…
An Analysis of Turn-Taking and Backchannels Based on Prosodic and Syntactic Features in Japanese Map Task Dialogs
In this study, we investigate syntactic and prosodic features of the speaker's speech at points where turn-taking and backchannels occur, on the basis of our analysis of Japanese spontaneous dialogs. Specifically, we focus on features such as part of speech, duration, F0 contour pattern, relative height of the peak F0, energy trajectory pattern, and relative height of the peak energy at the final part of speech segments. We examine, first, the re…

Political Communication Research
If, as the shopworn Chinese adage has it, a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, it would appear that political communication researchers have a great distance to travel towards uncertain destinations. The 15 articles making up this collection attest to the arguable view that political communication as a field of inquiry is desperately seeking definition. This, in part, is reflected in the editor's admission that the three general ca…
Media in Latin America and the Caribbean
While the ambitious title of this collection may be understandable, it is also unfortunate and, finally, misleading. It is unfortunate because a general criticism arising from the title could detract from several quality entries that comprise the set. It is misleading because eleven of the fourteen chapters focus specifically on or refer in their headings exclusively to Central American or Caribbean countries. Even the common thread, i.e., media,…

Politics and the News
In Politics and the News, Edwin R. Black searches out the interstices of the political system for the elusive stuff that will help him redefine one of pressdoma s hoariest myths : "the power of the press." While not eschewing the traditional and descriptive laundry-list of tensions between the press and government, e.g., news management, censorship, secrecy, etc . - Black's, after all, is an introductory work -- the political scientist in him lea…

Canadian-U.S. News Flow
An examination of the flow of news in 1976 between Canada and the United States in seven selected daily newspapers revealed an asymmetry as severe as that detected in 1962 when a significant imbalance of American news in Canadian dailies was documented.(1) The extent of the disproportionate flow in 1976 was especially striking given the surge of nationalism, often expressed in anti-American terms, that touched most of Canada's mass media system s…
