Andre Bizier, Tanya Smit et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

Background. African American/Black (hereafter referred to as Black) persons who smoke constitute a tobacco disparities group in the United States. Within the Black population, female smokers experience a disproportionate percentage of these disparities and are less likely to quit cigarettes than their male counterparts. Two factors implicated in female smokers’ relatively worse quit success are (1) motives to smoke to reduce negative affect and (…

  • The role of stress, perceived discrimination, and skin tone on cognitive performance in Puerto Rican adults

    Open Access•Michelle N Martinez, Elijah R Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2025

Results provide evidence of an interaction in which the relationship between stress and cognition differs across skin tone groups, even within an ethnic group. This suggests a modifying role of intersecting identities (e.g., ethnicity by skin tone) in understanding health outcomes. Additional research with a robust, diverse sample of Hispanic/Latin Americans is needed to continue examining the heterogeneity of heritage groups across various healt…

  • “War is a choice”: Matt Gallagher and the Ethics of War Writing

Open Access•Julien Brugeron, Matthew W Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Transatlantica•2023

I write both nonfiction and fiction, and I think I conceive them very differently. Nonfiction is much more about connecting readers to two issues of war and peace: trying to get everyday people, the kind of people that I grew with, the kind of people that I know in my civilian life now who don't really wrestle with these issues because they're not forced to, for a lot of power dynamics, and try to humanize it, to humanize what's happening to civi…

The most parsimonious of the multifactor models, a two-factor model with Avoidance symptoms as one factor and Intrusions and Hyperarousal combined into a second may be of greatest use for this particular version of the IES-R. The current research demonstrates strong psychometric support for Intrusion/Hyperarousal and Avoidance subscales when measuring traumatic stress in Spanish speakers and underscores the need for culturally and contextually se…

  • The unique effects of hope and gratitude on psychological distress and well-being in trauma-exposed Hispanic/Latino adults

    Amy R Senger, Matthew W Gallagher•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2023

The current study found that hope and gratitude predicted resilience in trauma-exposed Hispanic/Latino young adults. Decreased levels of gratitude were a stronger predictor of psychological distress and subjective well-being than decreased levels of hope, but hope was a robust predictor of the three well-being domains. The findings of this study may lend support for the development of hope and gratitude interventions in a Hispanic/Latino populati…

  • Hope, optimism, and self‐efficacy predicting mental health and illness in a community sample exposed to Hurricane Harvey

    Open Access•Johann M D'Souza, Laura J Long et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 70

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey flooded more than 300,000 buildings causing an estimated $125 billion in damages and resulting in 68 deaths (National Hurricane Center). This actual or threatened loss of life and physical harm led many to report negative effects on mental well‐being and greater mental illness. However, many individuals have been able to experience similar adverse events without a significant negative impact on their mental health and we…

  • Anxiety sensitivity and its association with perceived barriers for quitting, smoking inflexibility, and severity of quit problems among Black smokers

    M J Zvolensky, Brooke Y Redmond et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2022

Black individuals who smoke in the United States experience health disparities related to tobacco use (e.g., greater nicotine dependence, less success in quitting smoking) and interoceptive distress (e.g., somatic symptoms, anxiety). Individual difference factors that amplify interoceptive distress and contribute to poorer smoking behaviors and outcomes warrant further attention and investigation. Thus, the present study sought to explore the ass…

Background: Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disability globally. Most smokers want to quit, and most make a serious quit attempt each year. Nevertheless, more than 95% of cessation attempters relapse within six months. Thus, alternative interventions are needed to combat this major public health concern. Objective: The current study was conducted to develop and test a smoking treatment among 95 (63.2% male; Mage = …

  • Positive expectancies and mental health: Identifying the unique contributions of hope and optimism

Matthew W Gallagher, Shane J Lopez•ARTICLE•The Journal of Positive Psychology•2009

Contemporary theories of hope and optimism provide two explanations for how positive expectancies can shape human behavior and promote well-being. Scheier and Carver's theory of optimism focuses on generalized expectations of positive outcomes, whereas Snyder's hope theory focuses on how evaluations of personal agency can facilitate goal attainment. Although the theoretical distinctions between these constructs have previously been articulated, f…

  • The Hierarchical Structure of Well‐Being

    Open Access•Matthew W Gallagher, Shane J Lopez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2009

Theories of hedonic, eudaimonic, and social well‐being provide 3 extensively studied models for explaining flourishing mental health. Few studies have examined whether these models can be integrated into a comprehensive structure of well‐being. The present study builds upon previous theoretical and empirical work to determine the complex relationships among these 3 models of well‐being. Confirmatory factor analysis techniques were used to test a …

  • Optimism Is Universal: Exploring the Presence and Benefits of Optimism in a Representative Sample of the World

    Open Access•Matthew W Gallagher, Shane J Lopez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2013

Current theories of optimism suggest that the tendency to maintain positive expectations for the future is an adaptive psychological resource associated with improved well‐being and physical health, but the majority of previous optimism research has been conducted in industrialized nations. The present study examined (a) whether optimism is universal, (b) what demographic factors predict optimism, and (c) whether optimism is consistently associat…

  • Development and validation of the Overall Depression Severity and Impairment Scale.

    Kate H Bentley, Matthew W Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•2014

The need to capture severity and impairment of depressive symptomatology is widespread. Existing depression scales are lengthy and largely focus on individual symptoms rather than resulting impairment. The Overall Depression Severity and Impairment Scale (ODSIS) is a 5-item, continuous measure designed for use across heterogeneous mood disorders and with subthreshold depressive symptoms. This study examined the psychometric properties of the ODSI…

  • Time course of treatment dropout in cognitive–behavioral therapies for posttraumatic stress disorder

    Open Access•Cassidy A Gutner, Matthew W Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2015

A substantial minority of people drop out of cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There has been considerable research investigating who drops out of PTSD treatment; however, the question of when dropout occurs has received far less attention. The purpose of the current study was to examine when individuals drop out of CBT for PTSD. Women participants (N = 321) were randomized to 1 of several PTSD treatm…
