The architecture of memory and commemoration
By the mid-nineteenth century, classical art and architecture were established as major elements of America’s artistic vocabulary. In the wake of the American Civil War, classical forms offered a heroic, recognizable, and flexible vocabulary that was deployed in Civil War memorials. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch (1889–92) in Brooklyn, New York, was erected to commemorate Brooklyn’s soldiers and sailors who had fought for the Union duri…
A Roman monumental building in south-east Damascus?
Walls of a monumental building, apparently Roman in date, were found in the south-eastern section of the old city of Damascus in the basement of an Ottoman house during its conversion into a hotel in 2004–2011. The wall appears to be oriented to the Roman grid. The discovery of walls of a possible Roman monumental structure raises several important questions about the topography of this poorly understood part of ancient Damascus. This paper discu…

Planting pots at Petra
In June 2005, I conducted a survey of pottery from the Petra Garden and Pool Complex and the Petra 'Great Temple' to determine if there were any ollae perforatae, or planting pots, in use at these sites. My study demonstrated that planting pots were indeed present. In addition to my study of the pottery from past seasons, the ongoing excavations at both the Petra Garden and Pool Complex and the Petra 'Great Temple' yielded ollae perforatae. In th…
