Do Changes in the Stereotypic Depiction of a Lesbian Couple Affect Heterosexuals' Attitudes Toward Lesbianism
This study tested the hypothesis that heterosexuals with traditional sex role values would be less negative toward lesbians after reading a nonstereotypical description of a lesbian couple as opposed to a stereotypical description. Two experiments were conducted to assess stereotypes of lesbian couples and to test the hypothesis. Consistent with the hypothesis, traditional males showed significantly more positive attitudes toward lesbians as a re…
The effect of condom use and erotic instructions on attitudes toward condoms
It was hypothesized that erotic experiences with condoms would cause attitudes toward condoms to become more positive. Heterosexual couples were randomly assigned to three conditions. Couples received either condoms with instructions on how to incorporate them into sensuous foreplay, condoms only, or no condoms and no instructions. All couples received pre‐ and post‐tests on the Attitude Toward Condoms Scale (Brown, 1984). Both of the interventio…
Orgasmic latency and subjective ratings of erotic stimuli in male and female subjects
There are few ways in which comparable measures of sexual arousal may be obtained from males and females. Because latency to orgasm is an objective measure that is equivalent for both sexes, it may be a useful dependent variable for the investigation of response patterns and differences in men and women. To explore this possibility 24 men and 18 women participated in experimental sessions during which they masturbated to orgasm while viewing sexu…
Acute alcohol intoxication and female orgasmic response
This study tested the hypothesis that increasing levels of acute alcohol intoxication are related to systematic changes in female orgasmic experience reflected by physiological, behavioral, and cognitive indices. Using a repeated measures design with monthly experimental sessions, each of 18 university women were sustained at four different blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) in counterbalanced order prior to viewing sexually explicit videotapes a…
Alcohol effects on the orgasmic‐ejaculatory response in human males
Increasing levels of alcohol intoxication, as measured by blood‐alcohol concentration, produced significant degradation in male masturbatory effectiveness. Employing psychophysiological indices of orgasm and several subjective criteria, a progressive and systematic effect of alcohol on the orgasmic‐ejaculatory response was found. Results are discussed with implications for the etiology, treatment, and prevention of alcohol‐induced sexual dysfunct…
The effects of two types of erotic literature on physiological and verbal measures of female sexual arousal
Twelve female graduate student volunteers were presented with two sets of sex‐related stories. One set was classified as erotically realistic and the other as hard‐core pornography. Sexual arousal was measured physiologically by means of a vaginal photoplethysmograph and subjectively by self‐report scales. Both sets of stories produced sexual arousal. The hard‐core stories produced significantly greater arousal on the vaginal pressure pulse measu…
